How can we stop Animal Shelters from Killing?

I wanted to get advice from other animal lovers on how we can stop Animal Shelters from killing animals. Every year 4 million pets are put to sleep because Shelters either A: Don't give them enough time to find a home. B: They don't want to pay vet bills to treat them. And C: because they run out of room.

How should I start this? Write a letter to my senate? Get a petition started? What do you think?

Update:

I know that we would have to figure out what to do with all the extra animals and I know that we have to get to the root of the problem. That is why I am asking for advice, what do you think we should do?

Don't bash me for being against killing animals in shelters. I know that for every action there is a reaction. And we have to figure out how we are going to deal with the reaction.

So Please if you have advice, give it, otherwise click the back button and go find another question to answer.

Thanks!

encourage adoption, get people to adopt. the shelters are doing the best they can to provide a home and service. to get animals into safe homes.

The first and most important thing you can do is to EDUCATE people. Look through the pet section here how many times do you see, I want 2 breed me kitty cuz she is sooooo cute!!!. Those people and the people who breed for profit cause a lot of the problems. Educate people about over populate and how simply spaying or neutering their pet can help.

The next thing you can do is help be part of the solution, a letter to the senator isn't going to do much, but if you volunteer for your animal shelter, hold pet food drives for rescues and shelters, help raise money and awareness for those local shelters and rescues. It's not that the shelters dont WANT to pay the vet to treat them, it's the decision, ok I can treat this dog whom we will have trouble rehoming later, or I can spay 10 dogs that we have a good chance of adopting out. Which would you choose?

I think the most important thing you can do is go out be part of the solution, and encourage others to do the same.

The shelters do the best that they can. They are flooded with animals, and there simply aren't enough people who want to adopt the animals. No amount of looking for an owner is going to help if there is no owner to be found.

Every year those animals are euthanized because of irresponsible people. They are euthanized because people do not spay and neuter their animals. They are euthanized because people get tired of their animals and dump them. They are euthanized because people go to breeders and pet stores instead of shelters. While the shelters are forced to do the "dirty work", none of this is their fault. This is the fault of irresponsible pet owners, and people who buy rather than adopt.

Solution? People should be adopting any time they ever get an animal. They should be spaying and neutering every animal they get, and their pets should be with them for the duration of the animal's life.

How people can help? Adopt, spay, neuter. Donate to and volunteer at local shelters.

Edit: The shelters would LOVE to be able to pay the vet bills to treat every animal that walks through their door. Unfortunately, they do not have the funds to do so.

Where abouts do you live? In the UK the RSPCA was the only place that I knew of that put animals down and that was because they only gave them 4 weeks for adoption however this practice was stopped. I think places in America are much more flexible.

However if you must no an idea to stop it then encourage foster homing which means that workers look after some of the animals until homes are found.

I have a Q for you, What exactly are they supposed to do with the animals then? They have no room and no money and the animals just keep pouring in. Instead of bashing the shelters, try going to the root of the problem, the people putting them there.

ADD: Then work on a solution to the over population problem THEN worry about shelters killing animals. SHelters can't just wait till you have a solution.

Stop the mill breeders, BYBs, pet stores and irresponsible owners!

The shelters do their best. Generally they receive no funding and rely entirely on donations. Many of the staff will be volunteers. They do not have endless space, time and money - either they euthanase animals to create space to get more in, or they have a "no-kill" policy but have to turn animals away (which are just killed elsewhere).

It is NOT the fault of the shelters!

The problem is caused by an entire industry and social attitude that considers live animals as merchandise or disposable toys.

In order to stop animal ending up living and dying in shelters, we need to stop overpopulation by not breeding any more animals than we have good homes for.

If you personally want to help (good on you!) then here are some things I suggest:

    1) Support adoption only! Don't breed or buy while shelter pets die.

    2) Get your pets neutered.

    3) Do not shop for anything (even supplies) at pet stores that sell animals. The write to them and tell them you will not shop there until they stop selling live animals.

    4) Help the shelters - eg volunteer, donate money, help with fundraising etc. Some of the larger groups also do things like xmas gifts, or "ethical gifts".

    5) Keep an eye on Craigslist - their policy is that only animals for rehoming can be advertised on there. Check the adverts and if you see a breeder ad report it to the site operators to get it removed.

    6) Write to your legislators asking for better regulations on breeding animals, to clamp down on puppy farming, to raise the minimum age you can purchase animals, to ban the giving away of animals as prizes, to ban the sale of animals in pet stores etc.

    7) Check out your local papers - most will advertise for local breeders and puppy mills. Write to them and ask them to stop advertising for these people. Ask them toadvertise animals from local shelters instead.

    8) Write to the Kennel Club, or other animal breeding / showing clubs asking them to tighten their rules on breeding (eg ask to enforcfe a rule that breeders can only breed animals who are health tested etc).

    9) Start or sign petitions that will help to control breeding and selling of animals. (Not to mess up the shelters!)

    10) Try to educate other people about adoption, overpopulation etc.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

It's not the shelter's fault that people are irresponsible with their pets. There are more animals coming into the shelter than leaving. Putting them down is often the only thing they can do.

Some things you can do to help are: volunteer, spread the word about adoption, foster a dog or cat, organize adoption days to help find animals homes, or organize fund raisers for the shelter.

Do you have a close-by television station? call the station supervisor or the top newscaster & tell them approximately your "plight". now and lower back they are going to be happy to do a morning or afternoon "undertake-a-puppy" phase & exhibit animals for adoption. they might additionally be attracted to hosting a fund raiser to collect donations of money, unopened puppy nutrition, & puppy toys that should be used as an extra incentive to take delivery of out whilst a puppy is accompanied from the shelter. different than that, it sounds like your section is in desire of guidance to have their animals spayed & neutered, so as that this situation of undesirable animals can grow to be much less of a situation for you & your community. it is a tragic element of see & artwork around, yet whilst those animals weren't picked up or became in & they roamed the streets freely, then your city might have a large well-being & protection situation. the nice and comfortable button is guidance of the regular public & till then, euthanizing those animals seems to be like the only different answer. i'm in California & many counties are beginning as much as have mandatory spay & neuter courses to stop the overpopulation interior the kennels & shelters. in case you desire to maintain your animal intact, then you ought to have a breeders liscense, it is costly. if your animal is picked up, it is without delay fixed & there isn't any longer something you're able to do approximately it! this may well be a enormous situation & human beings ought to study approximately being to blame puppy vendors to place an end to this sadness. I wish you the better of success on your endeavors!
