What does an elevated Plasma viscosity indicate?
Hi. I have recently had an infection. all my blood tests were normal except the plasma Viscosity, which was elevated. Could anyone help me understand what this is indicative of please?
Thankyou for your replies.
I am not mistaken it was definatly the plasma Viscosity. The Doctor who did the test said it wasnt anything important and proberbly due to an infection... however it isnt the first time I have had a raised plasma Viscosity... no action was taken the last time. (BCP,CRP and TFTs were all normal).
Blood pressure was 110/65 which is,if anything,on the low side.

You're probably mistaken and they meant some other test, and not plasma viscosity.
If it is indeed elevated plasma viscosity, first thing that comes to mind is Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia (IgM overproduction), or multiple myeloma (IgG, IgA, etc.). These are hematologic malignancies, and it would be a little strange if someone checked plasma viscosity without you having symptoms of hyperviscosity and without strong suspicion of above conditions (based on other blood tests that were abnormal).
