How does a Stafford loan work for a US student at a Canadian university?

This is not a "Can I? Question - I know that part. I need to know HOW this works.

The point-person at the Canadian U I'm planning on attending for grad school hasn't gotten back to me, and I can't get ahold of her. With only 1.5 months to go, I'm getting a bit frustrated. My award package doesn't pay out until the 3rd week of the term, and I can't last that long on what little savings I have.

Update:

Who handles the loan? When does payment occur? Is it direct to me, or to the U? Do I have to line up the bank, and if so, does it have to be a US bank?

thanks

Stafford loans are sent directly to your school. After your tuition and books and fees and other costs are paid, the school will give you a check for the remaining balance. (Sometimes the school will do a direct deposit into your bank account. I doubt it has to be a US bank.)

It is true the school will not usually release the money until a few weeks until the semester starts. There is not much you can do about it.. except be sure you take up enough cash with you to survive. (I used my college graduation money and the money from my jobs during college to put up the deposit on my apartment, utilities, and first months rent and buy my books).

You are just going to have to find a way if you want this to work.

Another option is to go with college based housing, they may be a bit more lenient if they know you are awaiting fin aid, but you will prob still have to put up a cash deposit.

you extremely ought to get want-based help, although as you are able to think of scholars with a bigger verified want - be they American or otherwise - could get extra because of the fact their want is extra effective. bear in ideas, although, that international scholars are ineligible for any want-based help it somewhat is funded via the federal government, which covers lots of the main broadly-used supplies (Stafford and Perkins loans, Pell and SEOG supplies you, etc.). there is likewise benefit-based help, it somewhat is funds given to scholars consistent with fulfillment in severe college and their anticipated fulfillment in college/college. those awards can selection very much, and are often aimed in direction of making a college extra financially alluring to capability scholars, regardless of their economic want. for occasion, on the college I paintings at many scholars get some sort of benefit scholarship, however the quantities provided can selection via 1000's of greenbacks. so which you will definitely get funds, yet i think of you would be extra probably to get benefit-based help than want-based. The link under supplies some assistance approximately economic help for international scholars interior the U. S.. curiously, it variety of feels to declare that Canadian scholars have extra threat to get economic help than maximum different international scholars, yet i've got no longer examine the specifics. properly worth taking a glance, i could think of.
