No, I agree that they live totally sustainable lives. I don't think it is the least bit practical or helpful to think people should or could give up modern conveniences. I have made some serious changes to my lifestyle to reduce my impact on the earth, and hope to someday get close to carbon neutral, but there aren't enough places on the planet to get away from a modern society. We can consume less, eat local and organic diets, reduce packaging and recycle our waste, conserve water and energy, drive less and drive a low impact vehicle. These are easy changes that anyone can do, and the more people who make the choices the less pollution that will be produced.

Oh come on i use to live in Jackson Michigan allot of amish and they used modern conveniences . Gas powered water pumps for the wells . Gas powered saw mills to make there lumber . Best sound systems you ever wanted to see on there buggies . Ive even seen them use tractors but they had to take off the rubber from the wheels . What that was about i have no idea . A bunch of them even got busted for selling Cocaine . Woman all out in front of the local bars late at night all drunk hooping and hollering at cars going by lifting there long dresses . The amish are full of crap they just don't want to pay taxes that's all that's about . Just big old hippie communes made to look like a religious thing . Got to give them credit though they got the government fooled

A lot of amish do in fact use modern conveniences. They may not own cars or power tools, but they sure know how to use yours if they borrow them. Funny how that works.

You are wrong in the question. You said they don't USE modern conveniences. They do. I've seen Amish using power tools and gas-powered heavy machinery. They can't OWN them, but they can use them.
