for new Mummies who had a Cesarian section .....?
Did your medical team allow or encourage you to do upper abdominal massage to help involution? I know it's common in many hospitals if you've had a vaginal birth, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to do the same thing after my mandatory C-section. Any ideas ladies? Thanks!
I would like to say a special thankyou to all the people who replied with their personal tories. An overwhelming response! I just found out that I've got full placenta previa, so I'm really not at all informed on C-sections and am learning lots of things very fast. You've all been incredibly helpful. THANKYOU!!!!

Yes, after my c-section they pushed their fingers all over my sore stomach to keep my blood from clotting. They had to come in several times a day after my son's were first born. It hurt so so bad... I felt like I was going to pass out. But there was really nothing I could do, they had to do it to keep making sure I was not "hemorging" or what ever. Boy did it hurt.
Source(s): They have to have consent to do this? Really? I had no clue! The hospital did it to me w/o even asking me first. - PearLv 41 decade ago
I had a visit from a physio after my c-section who encouraged me to do pelvic floor and abdominal exercises to assist in bringing everything back to normal, but not massage.
I think you need to ask and also keep an open mind. Recovery can vary for different people. I did pregnancy related exercises throughout my pregnancy and had to have a c-sec (baby was breech). I don't know if it was the exercise or the fact that I didn't labour before hand but my recovery was very smooth and I probably could have massaged my upper abdomen no worries. I think it is important to speak to your doctor about your own circumstances though.
Also, breastfeeding will help it to shrink. I could feel it in most of my early feeds in hospital!

I will tell that that atleast for the first month after you will not want to touch your stomach. It will be very sore. I have never heard of this massage. My stomach though has gone down pretty slim again though and I am only four months past delivering. I would just let your stomach alone and let it take care of itself. It is going to have alot to deal with not only from the cut but also your intestines because as you may know, they get pulled out and put back in so it will be rough. Good luck to you!!

They didn't do that for me. I have heard of fundal massage but only if involution is not happening as it should. Otherwise I think they like to let things happen naturally. And also I have to agree with the first answerer--you are not going to want anyone to even touch your stomach much less massage it lol.

My first hospital did. But after my second c-section at another hospital they didn't. And after the second one my recovery was much easier. I have no idea if that has anything to do with it though.
But breast feeding was much easier the second time around. So maybe since my daughter was breast feeding so easily it wasn't necessary.

That was done to me without my consent after my daughter arrived via C-section, although they massaged fairly low, not far from my low transverse incision. I tell you I was in AGONY, begging them to stop. But they kept punching my belly down like a ball of damn bread dough. :( It was horrible. I highly doubt you would want that as well. Breastfeeding helps your uterus contract down faster and better than anything else; stick with that!

ooh you will not want to touch your stomach at all. it is very sensitive after a c-sections. good thing after a c-section is that they take everything out at the c-section your placenta and all. i could not imagine massaging my stomach i would have passed out i think

Nope they never mentioned anything like that to me. They tell you not to do anything for 6 weeks to avoid tearing your incision.
