battery opperated elctronics question?
I have a underwater metal detector, about 20 years old or more. Has sat up for 15+ years. Ran on 10 AA batteries. Old batteries were left in and corroded. Can't find a replacment battery holder, its a "radioshack" style box that clips in with a 9 volt style plug connector into the circut board connector .
I have two questions:
1) will I damage the unit if I use a 9 volt battery, rather than the
traditional 10 AA battery setup.?
2) will a 9 volt battery make the unit opperate differently?
3) I can't find a 10 battery box "AA " to replace the corroded one, can I use two "4 battery boxes" and one "2 batt box" instead? Will that need to be wired in any special way? Or can I just solder all the lead together?
If it matters the unit is a pistol style "treasure ray" metal detector designed specially for underwater use. Its about 16 inches long.

Even if your detector used a 9 volt supply, a 9 volt battery does not have the capacity to maintain stable current to the Transmitter coil. Your detector takes a 15 volt power source to operate at peak performance. Because the current to the transmitter coil switches direction thousands of times per second, it must have the full 15 volts.
You can use the combination battery holders as long as the boxes are in series but it may be easier buying a 10AA holder.
You can purchase a 10 AA battery holder here:

My advice is to go to Interstate battery, have them make you a 10 AA cell battery. Like a rechargable one that would have the same amount of power as 10 individual batteries. Then cut the red and black wires in the original holder and make a quick disconnect so you can easily connect/unconnect.
If this is confusing, go up to interstate battery and ask them what options you have.

10 AA batteries make 15 volts. 9V won't cut it.
Yes, you can likely use 4+4+2 holders. You need to wire it the same way as the original one, likely in series.
