How to set up a home server in Windows XP?

I have an old desktop lying around. I thought it would be cool to transform it to a server for my home. What should I do within XP for it to be a server? I mean what are the settings I have to do for it to become a server so that every computer in my home will connect to it.

XP is not a server Operating System and it will not do what you are asking it to do. It is like asking wnat you need to do to turn your car into an airplane.

You could load Windows Server 208 on the XP machine in place of XP.

XP is not a server OS. You need Windows Server or perhaps a copy of Linux would work.

It's also worth noting that there are many, many different kinds of servers (web server, e-mail server, file server, media server, etc).

Any version of XP can be used as a File server.

Set up shares and apply permissions to the folders.

Browse to them via UNC path from another machine.

Start\run from another machine and enter \\host\share\

Where "host" is your file servers name and then the share name.

You can also install TVersity witch is a fantastic media server software.

in case you elect to place in homestead windows NT an even have the XP, could desire to make a partition on your HDD or positioned yet another HDD to place in the different OS in new partition or HDD, or in basic terms set up the NT over the XP
