I have severe shoulder pain. Doctor says there's nothing anyone can do.?

I have had severe shoulder pain for about 6 months. There was no sudden trauma to my shoulder that I can remember. I am 20 years old and in good physical shape. I saw my primary care physician and she referred me to a physical therapist. The PT informed me that I had an elevated 1st rib on the right side. I completed all the physical therapy sessions, and they didn't help at all. In fact, the pain got worse. I returned to my physical therapist (hoping to get a better referral), and she informed me that if it was an elevated rib there is nothing that can be done about it. She took neck and shoulder x-ray and sent me on my way with a perscription for 800MG motrin. I take the motrin for pain, but it hardly puts a dent in the pain. It hurts most when I am lifting anything, and when I sit in front of a computer for long periods of time. The pain is getting worse. At its worse on a scale of 1-10 its a 7. There are no signs of swelling or infection as far as I can see. Can someone please give me some advice as to what is wrong with me? Or who I should see about this. Thank you!

Bethany, I am going to ask you to do a few exercises that should help. All that you will need is a straight chair to do them on. They may not seem to be related to your problem but they will help. Sit in the chair and raise the non-injured arm up as high as possible for thirty seconds and then rest it for fifteen seconds. Repeat that process twice more and now go to the injured arm. Raise this arm up as high as it can go for thirty seconds and then rest it for fifteen seconds. Repeat this twice more exactly the same way. Next turn your head to the left as far as it will go and then turn it to the right. One side will have turned further so start on that side. Turn your head in that direction as hard as you can for thirty seconds and then rest it for fifteen seconds. Again repeat this twice more exactly the same way and once done go to the opposite side and repeat the entire routine exactly the same way three times. Now go back to the injured side and raise it again and see how it moves. There should be some improvement. Next get some weight that you can handle comfortably with the uninjured arm and raise it up ten times and rest for one minute. If that weight was too easy then raise it up slightly and again lift it up ten times. Rest the arm for one minute and then lift it again either with the same weight or if you can a slightly heavier one. Again do the lifts ten times and then rest. Now take the lightest weight and start lifting it for one set of ten. How was that? It should feel easier. If it was then either lift that weight up again for another set of ten or if possible lift a slightly higher weight ten times. Again it should have been easier. Do the lift one more set of ten either with that weight or a slightly heavier one. The shoulder should be feeling better at this point with more motion and strength. Do this routine twice a day and things will get better.

This is a classic case of a Chiropractic neck problem leading to pain elsewhere. The problem works like a triangle from the neck, to between the shoulders, to the shoulder itself.

All the nerve roots get irritated in the neck and shoot into the shoulder.

See a good HMO/Insurance list Chiropractor. They will absolutely be able to help. Look for one that does sports chiropractic - they have to help lots of tennis players, etc.

It may be a slipped disc...it sounds like your spinal cord is being pinched off and thats why you have tingling and pain in your arm
