Will AT&T ever offer free caller ID for wired phones?

It took them about 20 years to finally stop charging for touch tone. Will they ever do the same with caller ID? Every cell phone offers it free.

Doubt it. Will be interesting to see what happens. Magic Jack gives us all for one intial cost of $39.99. After a year it's only $60 total for the next five years. I recommend get it for your second line NOW as it's going to get wild and crazy out there.

Doubt if this will happen. In the meantime get on the Do Not Call List

and get a prepaid cell phone. The people I want to have my number

can call me via my cell. The land line is only for 911 purposes and

    emergencies.

It's not "free" with a cell phone; it's just included in your monthly bill as part of your service. AT&T does the same thing in certain service packages, but not in all of them. In either case, you're paying for it.

It's possible, but I doubt it. Most local exchange carriers make no real money on the basic line. It's all the extras that are the "bread & butter" of their profits.
