  • How to make user's activity public instead of private on YA?

    When I set up my account years ago, I opted for private activity: no one can review my past answers. Now I have a reason to open that up, but don't see a way to do it in Account Settings or otherwise. Anyone know the secret?

  • Windows 10 mail app enable sound on incoming message?

    The mail app in Windows 8.1 played an audible alert upon receipt of a new message. It's enabled in the app's account settings, and the sound is chose in Control Panel > Sound. Worked great in 8.1.

    I can't see how to turn it on in the same mail app in Windows 10. Still have the sound selections in Control Panel, but nothing in the mail account settings seems to activate the sound.

    Searching the Microsoft website and forums provided no clue. Anyone?

  • Is there a reason to continue answering questions on YA?

    After answering questions in a YA technical forum for 7 years, I have to wonder if there's a reason to continue. There is no reward for providing professional-level technical help other than getting a BA vote by the asker and seeing your ID rise on the top ten list in that forum. But YA stopped BA voting a year or so ago and they do nothing to motivate askers to select one; so it mainly never happens (at least, not in the technical forums). I've been on the top 10 list for years so it's not a big deal for me, but why should anyone else bother? It seems Yahoo has made the entire YA app a waste of time.

  • Where is "Check My PC" in Windows 10 app?

    The Windows 10 app, in the Notification Area on the Windows 8.1 taskbar, is supposed to have a "Check My PC" routine to verify compatibility with Windows 10. How do you find it? I don't see it anywhere in the app, including the right click menu.

  • How to tell your Best Answer total within a specific forum?

    If you're among the top 10 answerers in a forum, your BA count in the forum is clearly displayed. Is there a way to see your BA count in a forum in which you have a lot of BAs but less than the top 10?

  • Is Yahoo willing to fix the problems in Answers?

    What YA really needs:

    1. Stop askers from answering their own question. (Use Update or Comment.)

    2. Stop askers for posting "thumbs up" on their own question.

    3. Require any "thumbs down" post to require an explanatory comment.

    4. Require askers to choose a Best Answer before posting another question.

    5. Bring back the search tool for open questions by keyword or phrase.

    6. Banish deliberate repeat offenders (TOS violations).

    I'm sure this list could be expanded. Comments invited.

  • Value of an unopened 50 year old bottle of whiskey?

    I have an unopened 1-qt. bottle of Canadian Club blended whiskey, with all labels and seals. It was bottled in 1965, purchased in 1971, and has been in dark storage ever since. 3 questions:

    1. Is the whiskey still good?

    2. Is what I have particularly valuable?

    3. If it's valuable, what's the best way to sell it, and what might I expect for it?

  • Yahoo Answers--do YA staff personnel endorse suicide?

    I answered a question from someone apparently considering suicide that he needs to consider that suicide permanently solves what in reality is a temporary problem that would resolve itself in time. That got reported for an undefined TOS violation (????), and as expected, I lost the appeal. So if I'm wrong, doesn't that suggest that YA personnel endorse the opposite of my answer--go kill yourself?

  • Why are there no programs to uninstall in Windows RT 8.1?

    Surface 1 tablet with Windows RT 8.1. In attempting to uninstall an app, I went to Control Panel, Programs, Uninstall a Program, and found the list totally empty, despite the usual host of apps being loaded on the machine. Rebooted, same result. Where are the apps found in RT 8.1 when you want to uninstall them?

  • Excel: repeat the last entry in a column?

    In MS Excel, is there a formula that will repeat the last entry in a column? For example, here are 5 cells in column A:

    A1= 300

    A2= 400

    A3= (blank)

    A4= (blank)

    A5 = the last entry above

    In A5, I'd like a formula that displays the last cell above it that has an entry. In the above example, A5 would show "400." If I enter a new value in A3, then A5 would automatically show the value in A3.

    This should be a common function, as A5 would be the balance due on a simple accounts receivable statement. I tried Excel Help and Search Answers in Yahoo for this and found nothing. Thank you in advance.

  • Entering recurring weekly events in Windows 8 calendar?

    I've become a fan of the calendar tile on the Windows 8 start screen. But one annoyance: I have some recurring events, every week, same day and time. Do I have to enter each one of those individually? Is there a way to enter them once as the same event "every Thursday at 12 noon" or whatever? Some sort of copy and paste function maybe?

  • Using "it" as a direct object pronoun?

    Here is a short exchange I've attempted to translate to Spanish

    Q. "Do you know any English?"

    A. "Yes, I can speak it."

    My attempt at Spanish for the above:

    P. "¿Sabes alguna del inglés?

    C. "Sí, yo puedo hablarlo."

    In particular, is the above response precisely correct? I'm unsure about using the direct object pronoun (lo) that way--hablarlo. Should it be something else?

    Mil gracias.

  • Download updates during laptop "sleep" or "hibernate"?

    My new laptop "goes to sleep" after a few minutes of inactivity, then some time later drops into hibernate mode. Question: can automatic updates for Windows, the security suite, Adobe, etc. be received during "sleep" or "hibernate?" Or must the laptop be fully "awake"?

    If the laptop has to be up and running to get an update, what techniques are there to ensure it's awake at those unknown times when an update is received?

  • Proper use and translation of Spanish word?

    My hispanic friend tells me there is a Spanish word to physically describe a person with northern European features, such as a typical white American. As he pronounces it, is sounds like it would be spelled UEDO in Spanish. Phonetically in English, it sounds like WAY-DOE, with the accent on the "way."

    I cannot find anything like that in the several Spanish dictionaries or on-line translators that I use. My questions, then, are:

    1. Is this an actual Spanish word?

    2. If yes, what is the correct Spanish spelling?

    3. Do I have the pronunciation right?

    4. Is this a neutral term? That is, not offensive in some way?

    Serious answers only, please. I'm much to old for the other kind. Muchas grácias.

  • How to transfer Outlook Express to another computer?

    My home network has 3 XP computers. Two have Outlook Express, which we all prefer here. I want to load it into the 3rd machine.

    Apparently, it cannot be obtained from the MS website. I tried their Live Mail program as a substitute, and it won't do.

    Can I copy Outlook Express from one computer and successfully load it into another with full functionality? The target computer has XP Pro and IE-8.

  • Saved addresses (URLs) on Firefox address bar?

    My turn to ask a question for a change. I've noticed that on my Firefox (ver. 3.0.11), any URL I go to that happens to be a bookmark gets permanently saved on the pulldown URL list at the address bar. Such URLs are noted by a gold star. Since these are bookmarks, I don't need them there; they just clutter up the list. Yet, when I try to delete them (highlight-DELETE), they don't go away. They also don't go away via TOOLS-OPTIONS-PRIVATE DATE-CLEAR NOW-BROWSING HISTORY.

    They will go away temporarily with [hightlight - DELETE], but when I restart the browser, they're back.

    URLs that are not bookmarks can be deleted from the list as expected.

    I searched Yahoo Answers for this topic before posting this question, but each answer only suggested what I've already tried (above), and none addressed the fact that the URLs shown are bookmarked URLs.

    I noticed some posts on this topic that suggest Norton is the culprit. FWIW, I used the McAfee suite from Comcast.

    Anyone have a clue?

  • How to change profile image?

    Okay, my turn to ask a question for a change. I've uploaded an image in order to change the profile photo in my Yahoo Answers profile. When I look at the profile, the new image is there. But the image doesn't appear with any of the new answers that I post, nor with any of the existing ones. (Nor with this question, it seems.)

    I tried searching "profile photo" in the search window and got one answer saying to upload the image in my Yahoo 360 account. But when I go there and look at my account, the new image is already there.

    Also, there's an announcement that Yahoo 360 is closing down soon.

    So what am I missing?

  • 1080p programming via DirecTV?

    For some time I've been advising forum readers that, at the present time, the only source for true 1080p programming is Blu-Ray discs and, to a limited extent, pay-per-view programs via DirecTV. That latter option is not based on personal experience, and something doesn't quite feel right about it.

    Knowing the limits of broadcast satellite downlinks, I'm wondering if DirectTV's 1080p is *really* full 1080p, or is it a highly compressed version that actually doesn't compete with Blu-Ray or even uncompressed 1080i in picture quality.
