Spiritually speaking...Is Jimmy Carter a moral champion?
He left his church as a result of the mistreatment of women. What do you think about that?

Jimmy Carter is a mixed bag. I think his statement regarding his decision to leave the Baptist Church reveals that he continues to evolve morally, and that he takes his faith very seriously. However, one of the shortcomings of Christianity is to view the Jews and the Jewish religion in terms of Christian theology. He is locked into this and has come out with some truly odd statements that have offended many Jews. I nonetheless am convinced that he is not anti-Jewish and is a sincerely good man who is doing the best he can to deal with a world that is far less moral than he is. Is he a champion? Yes, not because he holds one view or another, but because he is willing to grapple with difficult issues. The word comes from the French 'champ,' meaning 'field.' It signified one who entered the field of battle, fighting for a cause. I think he qualifies, although he has not triumphed all the time.

I think a lot of churches think they have the monopoly on spirituality and morality. It isn't until somebody amongst them wakes up and sees the reality of the message that is being pushed that the light gets shined back upon them (the church) and they are found wrong footed. Hypocrisy wears many faces and sometimes hides in the dark. It takes a brave soul to shine the torch on it. Good for you Jimmy Carter, in being true to yourself and having the courage to air your personal realisation of the pitfalls of your religious affiliation. But please don't open your own church on the basis of it.

Basing my answer simply on reading the linked article, I see a man who has character, who refuses to let others decide what he should believe (church leaders) and whom I applaud whole-heartedly for his public declaration of this.
I am an atheist....but, I have no axe to grind in that regard. Most religions have a basic philosophy which enables societies to function with the minimum of conflict (no killing, stealing, lying, immorality etc.) Religious leaders do have a responsibility, however, to search their consciences....and to reflect on what is 'right'. Oppression of women must surely be one of the 'wrongs'

I knew I always liked it.
That and he is the only true liberal president America has had for a president, since Kennedy. Maybe Obama.
Rene: So, if you don't allow Israel to boss around America, your an anti-Semite? Bravo...
