If you own the company, your wife can call herself whatever she wants, I suppose.

The attorney I used to work for called me his Legal Secretary, Legal Assistant, Assistant, and Office Manager and I received yearly raises. It didn't bother me what he called me called me (as long as it wasn't a disrespectful name), I always did the best job I possibly could without receiving overtime pay and he always paid me on time. Job titles don't necessarily reflect the true job that is done in an office.

Does your wife actually do the work that an Executive Assistant would do? If you don't have a problem with "promoting" her to whatever title and pay grade she wants, why not do it to please her? But only do this if you think your wife deserves this "promotion." And I suppose the job of an Executive Assistant is worth a raise, especially if your wife does more than just type and send faxes for you. I know when I worked in legal offices, I did a lot more than just type and send faxes... a whole lot more. Dealing with clients in the office, maintaining case files, vendor and supply lists, researching documentation, getting clients coffee, buying office supplies, scheduling appointments and answering office phone calls is also part of what a "secretary" or "assistant" usually does for her "boss."

You can call a 'house keeper' an Executive Assistant instead of a 'maid' these days... it all depends on what duties that a person does, if they are dependable and if they earn their pay. Your wife is really lucky that she has a job working with you because I've known my fair share of business owners who found out the hard way that having family members as employees didn't work out too well for them. If your wife is indespensible to your business, then you should treat her well, reward her with a new title and raise her pay.

Oh it is simple. A secretary helps one guy and does a limited range of things. An executive assistant helps in a wider way and sometimes more executives.

One of the biggest differences is sex. You hear about chasing a secretary around your desk. And executive asstant should be able to feel your mood and come in and provide relief when needed. Plus, she might have to relieve another executive or client.

So if she is doing the job then she deserves the pay. Ask the other executves and see how good she is doing?

I think that you are being bullied around because she is your wife, and knows that she can obviously do this to you. Do you guys have a joint account for your money? If so, then she has access to your money anyways, and the pay raise doesn't make a difference. I think that she doesn't like the idea of being called a secretary, and the title Executive Assistant sounds much better to her. Hey, if she doesn't deserve it, then she doesn't need it. That's why it's a bad idea to hire family, because they feel that they deserve special attention. Look, when you are on the clock, you are my employee, and that's the way you need to make her see this. It's not personal, it's business. Haven't you heard that before? Why wouldn't that apply to her? It applies to everyone else doesn't it?

OK ez to handle, I hired my wife as a secretary too. After a couple of weeks she wanted a raise and a higher position, she demanded it too. So, we fought for a month on it, and I decided if she wanted a raise she would have to be treated like a normal employee, have to wait 90days probation, and need to show initiative to run the company alone if I should be out of the office along with all other responsibilities. After first year with no problems then will consider promotion and possibly another increase in pay.

She quit and I hired a part time secretary who worked out just fine. I learned that if a family member isn't going to help you profit in your business then they shouldn't work for you.

    Good Luck

It makes sense because she is right. Unless the only thing you want her to do is to type and keep an appointment book and even at that she would be an executive assistant and would be due more pay than if she just fetched your coffee. Being your wife is not excuse to try and shortchange her on her paycheck

I think you are pussy whipped. You have one of those wives that will never be happy. The next thing, she will tell you that an executive assistant needs her own secretary. (a male). She wil be running the company soon, if she is not already doing so.

You need to check with an attorney about the complication you are getting yourself into with this company.

You could find yourself on the outside looking in as soon as she decides she can run the show with her secretary and she doesn't want you around any more. I bet she has already run off a lot of your good help.

If her qualifications have been upgraded since you hired her or if she deserves the raise, give it to her. If not, tell her to be patient.

She is your wife! Give it to her. She does other things for you at home. Let her have this. It will show her that you respect and appreciate her!

give her the title and pay her what you know she's worth...not as your wife but based on her skills. put your foot down. it's your business...tell her she will get the same as any other employee.
