Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

"Sure, America is the land of religious freedom, as long as the religion you chose is some form of Christianity."

My sister commented this on my political blog (Confessions of a Poliholic) on my last post about religious freedom.

Update:

Sawyer, I disagree. My sister is one of the most intelligent people I know. When you grow up with someone who completed a double major in four years and just spent the summer in Germany writing for a German newspaper as an American, get back to me.

Of course she and I understand that we technically do have religious freedom in America, but the point is that it seems as if we only have that freedom in writing. It's hardly applied.

Agreed. None are more discriminated however than atheists. True religious freedom includes the freedom to not believe at all. Several States in the US, the land of the free, still have laws on the books barring atheists from holding public office

There's the Constitution and our Founding Fathers trying to ensure that the American people would live free from religious persecution

then there's the modern day conservative driven reality which has made the Constitution little more than... "just a goddamned piece of paper"

Did you know that in the 1960s only christians were allowed to participate as astronauts in NASA? This is a great example of how deeply religious discrimination is ingrained in USA society.

It still exists today no matter how strongly christians deny it.

When atheists and Muslims start getting elected in America I'll reconsider my position.

Disagree, at least from my point of view.

Those Founding Fathers back in the past probably did agree with that statement, and everyone else probably did as well, until integration of religion.

    And don't listen to Sawyer.

    Not entirely,

I think the lack of freedom is far more extensive than that.

The united states prides itself on its freedom. However, from the outside, the states look like they are heavily censored.

The freedom only extends to those who can afford it, and the many who can't afford it are barely mentioned or portrayed on the media...

... unless they are portrayed as lazy, stupid or criminal.

    I disagree.

Christmas displays are no longer allowed in a lot of places.

An old neighborhood in my area, once known for its tidy little homes inhabited mostly by Polish immigrants was upset when people went to court - and WON - to have Muslim calls to prayer broadcast over speakers throughout the neighborhood. (But those pretty church bells were just "pesky" and belittling to Muslims.)

How many universities have installed "foot washing stations" for Muslims?

This could go on all day, but I'm tired of typing. Might wanna check your facts. Doesn't look to me like Christianity is being pushed on people.

Source(s): Why would you thumbs down facts? I guess your sister only wants views that mesh with hers. Hey, kind of like Obama and his popularity polls. Maybe she can be president one day.

I disagree I proclaim to be a 7th day christian and I am told that Obama is a Muslim. That does not bother me in the least.I believe in the freedom to choose.

Your sister has a VERY valid point in areas where intolerance is the norm...but there are (non-Convervative/non-GOP) areas of the US where people are not persecuted for being different...most often the northern, urban areas.

Disagree. We are free to which ever religion we chose...this is the MAIN reason people first came to "The New Land".

Your sister isn't the brightest shade in the box.

edit. lol. Yes, I'll do exactly that....screw my own schooling and ambitions.

Source(s): California - where there's a different type of church on every corner.

    Disagree.

the 1st amendment protects this nation from having an established religion.

but unfortunately, many evangelicals use religion as an excuse to push their beliefs on others.
