Hitler was a "self proclaimed" christian but not a true christian, do you agree?

Chris·tian (krschn) KEY

ADJECTIVE:

Professing belief in Jesus as Christ or following the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus.

Relating to or derived from Jesus or Jesus's teachings.

Manifesting the qualities or spirit of Jesus; Christlike.

Relating to or characteristic of Christianity or its adherents.

Showing a loving concern for others; humane.

NOUN:

One who professes belief in Jesus as Christ or follows the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus.

One who lives according to the teachings of Jesus.

Hitler did not live a life according to the teachings of Jesus. Especially the part that says to love others and do good to each other.

Everyone who is saying that Hitler was a Christian (in the true sense of the word) is absolutely off their rocker and have no common sense.

HITLER WAS NOT CHRISTLIKE!!!!!!

No, I disagree. Anyone who claims to worship Jesus is a Christian. There is no such thing as an objectively "true christian", that's just something that some Christians say to protect their ego. Please note that the definition you provided specifically says "One who professes belief in Jesus as Christ." Hitler fits squarely into that category, even though you personally disagree with some of his choices.

If behaving in a "Christlike" way is what makes a person a "True Christian," then as far as I'm concerned there are only a handful of "True Christians" in the world, and I bet that most of them don't actually believe in Christianity. I think Jesus would be appalled at the way most "self-proclaimed Christians" act.

Maybe 1 of 5 Christians are Christlike.

  • Well, there are plenty of people who have called themselves Christian who have acted anything but Christlike. He wasn't the first, and he wasn't the last. A cursory look at history will show mass brutality and utter cruelty in the name of Christianity. And even today, there are some truly nasty people who call themselves Christians. Fred Phelps and his crazy family is but one example. The guy who bombed the 1996 Olympics and some gay nightclubs was believed to identify as Christian. I could name a few more, but in the interests of brevity, I won't.

So, while it's probably true that there wasn't much Christlike about the individual whose name you invoke, but then there's not much that's Christlike about many modern so-called Christians either.

By the definition that you provided then Hitler was a christian.I don't know anyone, christian or otherwise, who is "christlike".

All his life Hitler professed his belief in christianity.By your own definition you lack common sense, and logic to boot.

So, by your reasoning every entry in a dictionary means ALL of the definitions below it simultaneously.

Hitler was a Christian because he was baptized into a Christian denomination according to the rules of that denomination. Which means he was proclaimed by that denomination to be a Christian - not self-proclaimed. That denomination also never expelled him from membership.

Hitler was a Christian until the day he died. I'm sorry if you can't accept that, but it is a fact.

And who the hell ever said that a person had to be "Christ-like" in order to be a Christian? If that's true, then there has never been a Christian. Not even one.

Some Christians get very defensive over this sort of thing, as if it reflects badly on all of them if someone who calls themselves a Christian does something horrible. Relax. No one is going to think less of you because you are a Christian and Hitler also called himself a Christian.

Nor are 90% of the christians out there who claim to be...I understand your point, but he still claimed the religion.

At what point does the majority represent the group, and the "true blue christians" separate themselves from the term?

Swastikas used to mean good luck, but Hitler ruined that too...

If you understood the history of Christianity, you would know that there are NO Christians, since the whole thing was invented by Paul, in very much the same way that Joseph Smith invented Mormonism.

There's a sucker born every minute.

Hitler is an example of a typical Christian. It is basically a fascist religion (perhaps not in theory, but certainly in practice).

Half of the "Christians" running around today aren't Christlike either...

    What about them?
