osteoarthritis in ankle?

How long will it be before I will be able to walk without crutches again?

I have sprained and/or torn ligaments and tendons in this one ankle 3 times over 30 years. The last injury to this ankle was 8 years ago.

Three weeks ago, while getting up from my computer my ankle suddenly swelled up and then the pain set in. I immediately elevated it, used ice and wrapped it. Then a couple days ago I thought I was out of the woods and took the wrap off. The very next day, while getting into my car, the ankle suddenly swelled up again and the pain was incredible.

My husband took me to Urgent Care, they took x-rays and the doctor diagnosed me with oasteoarthritis and told me there is nothing they can do about it.

He did not put me in any kind of cast or wrap and I had to ask him for a prescription to purchase crutches.

It has been 5 days now, I have been icing it - elevating it - and using my crutches.

Is there really nothing that can be done for my ankle?

Arthritis is an incurable disease. I have had it since 1994. The pain is terrible and you have to learn to live with it. My ankles swell too and I can always tell when the weather is going to change, get cold, or rain. I hurt when it is humid outside, basically I hurt all the time. I have it all over my entire body, back, feet, hands, arms, ankles. Take some Aleve, Advil, or get some Percogelsic for the pain. Also, aspirin helps with the swelling. My doctor told me I could take up to nine aspirin a day. The heat wraps you can buy at the pharmacy do help, also Ben Gay helps as does resting.
