can I have a tenant removed by only giving them a 72 hour notice?
I just bought a house that a lady was renting. The current lessees are behind on the rent and since she has allowed me to enter the premises, I have seen (and smelled) the mess she has. Since the house is not mine and she has not paid rent, can I ask her to leave the premises with in 72 hours or do I have to file any paperwork?
she had already given notice to the previous owner and now is telling me she won't leave until she is ready to. Since I have bought the house, the brand new air conditioner mysteriously stopped working and the carpet aquired bleach spots...she is tearing the house up and not paying any rent to anyone at all.

You need a court order, just like any other landlord.
Look up evictions for your state.
It will take you about 3 weeks to get her out of there.

YES! A tenant can be evicted with 72 hr notice for not paying the rent. You need to serve them with a written 72 hr notice. If they do not pay or move out with in those 3 days then you can file an eviction with the court on the 4th day. The court will then give them a date to be out by.
NO! You do NOT have to give a 30 days notice when the tenant has not paid rent! Some of you answering need to learn the laws.

No you cannot do that. You must give her a 30 day notice or evict her. To evict her you must go to the courthouse in which the property is located and file an eviction notice.

All states have a legal eviction process you must abide by, but they do vary. Google to find your state's guidelines. Not abiding by the legally required process is setting yourself up for major liability.
As to the damage - you can bill her for damages beyond normal wear and tear. This can be taken through the small claims and credit systems if she doesn't pay.
