Good answers from the other posters... but when figuring how many units you can cut from a fabric width, deduct at least 2" from each dimension of the original fabric... so I'd consider 40" fabric to be 38" wide for "figuring purposes", and a yard in length I'd consider to be 34".

This deduction is for four purposes:

1) There are "factory edges" on fabric, running the length of the fabric. These are called selvages or selvedges (spelling varies), and are more tightly woven than the body of the fabric. If you cut your fabric squares including the selvages, the quilt will pucker where those selvages are. So exclude them from your square. You'll actually lose about 3/4" or so in fabric width this way, but you're also likely to have some shrinkage -- see #2.

2) Shrinkage. Fabrics are woven and finished under tension, which is why they come off the bolt nice and flat (or at least they should). Before you sew a fabric, however, it needs to be prewashed or preshrunk to let the yarns in the fabric relax. You usually lose a little in width and a little more in length when you do so. Shrinkage percentages vary -- from almost none up to an astounding 30% in some specialty fabrics. 2-5% is pretty typical of run of the mill cotton fabrics.

3) Fabric store clerks rarely cut squarely across the width of the fabric... losing a couple of inches to squiggly cutting is not unusual, alas.

4) Miscutting on your part... cutting perfect squares isn't easy. It's not unusual for beginners to botch 20% or more of their squares.

So give yourself a little leeway when figuring fabric amounts.

Well, 10 inches doesn't divide evenly into 1 yard. That is the problem with imperial measurements. Metric is a lot easier....

Fabric comes in a variety of widths. You need to determine how much you need, and then purchase enough length (plus a little extra) to make all the squares you require. You are going to have some wastage... that is just the way it is. Getting fabric that is as close to a multiple of 10 inches is going to work the best for you (60 inches by 60 inches is the best).

One yard of fabric is 36 inches long and varies in width, usually 36 to 60 inches . So you would be able to get 3 10 inch squares down, and three to six wide. Depends on the actual dimensions of the fabric. Since fabric is cut when you buy it, you can ask for it as long as you want. Just bring your calculator and get a little extra fabric in case you make a mistake.
