What songs sound like they’re exorcising the songwriter’s demons?

You know, like, there was a monster eating the songwriter up inside and they just needed to put it in a song to get it out of them?

BQ: This question was inspired by the real answer to why I chose writing as a profession. But there’s a line in a Tom Waits song—“If I exorcise my devils, well my angels may leave too”. Should I be worried about that?

First ones that come to my mind are..

    Nine Inch Nails - Hurt

    And also The Becoming

    Some others are...

    Tool - H.

    Tool - Jimmy

    Tool - Pushit

    Tool - Bottom

    APC - The Package

    Radiohead - Street Spirit

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Warped

    Alice In Chains - Dirt

    AIC - Sickman

    AIC - Angry Chair

    AIC - Hate to Feel

    I know there's a lot more...

BA: No I don't think so but it may feel like that sometimes. For some reason when we let go of those things (whatever they may be - demons, skeletons, defects, fears, resentments, etc.) we can feel empty... like there's nothing left or there is a part of us missing. But it's only temporary if we choose to fill the void with love. I know that sounds lame but it's true.

  • "Sara" ~ Bob Dylan. he knew that his 12-year marriage to the model Sara Lownds was near its end when he wrote the song. The Rock Critic Tim Riley wrote that it was "a fevered cry of loss posing as sincere devotion."

I laid on a dune I looked at the sky

When the children were babies and played on the beach

You came up behind me, I saw you go by

You were always so close and still within reach.

    Sara, Sara

Whatever made you want to change your mind

    Sara, Sara

So easy to look at, so hard to define.

I can still see them playing with their pails in the sand

They run to the water their buckets to fill

I can still see the shells falling out of their hands

As they follow each other back up the hill.

    Sara, Sara

Sweet virgin angel, sweet love of my life

    Sara, Sara

    Radiant jewel, mystical wife.

Sleeping in the woods by a fire in the night

Drinking white rum in a Portugal bar

Them playing leapfrog and hearing about Snow White

You in the marketplace in Savanna-la-Mar.

    Sara, Sara

It's all so clear, I could never forget

    Sara, Sara

Loving you is the one thing I'll never regret.

I can still hear the sounds of those Methodist bells

I'd taken the cure and had just gotten through

Staying up for day in the Chelsea Hotel

Writing "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" for you.

    Sara, Sara

Wherever we travel we're never apart

    Sara, Sara

Beautiful lady, so dear to my heart.

    How did I meet you ? I don't know

A messenger sent me in a tropical storm

You were there in the winter, moonlight on the snow

And on Lily Pond Lane when the weather was warm.

    Sara, Sara

Scorpio Sphinx in a calico dress

    Sara, Sara

You must forgive me my unworthiness.

Now the beach is deserted except for some kelp

And a piece of an old ship that lies on the shore

You always responded when I needed your help

You gimme a map and a key to your door.

    Sara, Sara

Glamorous nymph with an arrow and bow

    Sara, Sara

Don't ever leave me, don't ever go.

Electroshock Blues(the whole stinking album) - The Eels

In which E (aka Mark Oliver Everett), try's to come to terms with the recent suicide of his sister (Elizabeth on the bathroom floor) and the impending death of his mother from cancer (cancer for the cure, hospital food, climbing up to the moon). Very moving stuff.

Surprisingly enough it ends on a happy note (PS you rock my world)...

BA: nah, unless you're a dualist....I believe evil can only live on the crumbs the good provides....

Source(s): "I was at a funeral the day i realized I wanted to spend my life with you Sitting down on the steps at the old post office The flag was flying at half mast And i was thinking 'bout how Everyone is dying And maybe it is time to live"

The beginning of Sonic Youth's "Teenage Riot" sounds like the singer's having an intense game of tag with some demons or something.

    Good afternoon :)

The ad-libbed ending on Fleetwood Mac's 'Gold Dust Woman'.

    {"Pale shadow of a woman... Black widow...She's a dragon"}

This can be especially felt on the live in Japan performance :

BQ : In some ways, I feel that may be true, as 'good' and 'evil' will always have a balance. For every angel on your shoulder, there is a demon lurking in your soul...

BA: No, you determine the good parts of your life. You can get bad stuff out of your system through writing, but you decide the good stuff by your attitude to life.

Lover, You Should Have Come Over, by Jeff Buckley. When he belts it out, I believe him.
