1987 toyota pickup brake problem?

here's the story thus far...i left the driveway this morning (backing out) and noticed a little drag. i made sure the E brake was disengaged and continued in reverse. upon exiting the driveway i put it in 1st gear ( 5 speed) and my drivers side rear wheel locked up. i ended up putting it in 4 low just to get it out of the road. when i got home i started it and put it in reverse and had no problem getting it back in the driveway but i still can't drive forward. anyone with any idea as to what the hell happened?

and replacing the truck is out of the question so don't even suggest it

Sounds like something in the brakes has broke you will need to remove the drum and have a look if you take the other side off you can look at it to match up what it should look like and see whats wrong there is a few things that could of broke adjusting screw, spring, caliper, brake pad.

It maybe broke and wedged so when you go in reverse it doesn't bind but when going foreword it does

Sounds like a frozen wheel cylinder to me...Pull off the wheel and drum...Have a friend press the brake ever so gently...You,ll be able to inspect the function of the wheel cylinder this way.You may also have to adjust the wheel cylinder out...

E-brake cable gets my vote. the small rubber boots that cover the brake cable deteriorate with time and let water inside the cable where they corrode and make it stick. Last thing you did when parking the truck was set the parking brake right?--Bingo. There is cable for each side which is why one side is locked. Good luck--T&T
