You need to enter some info in the modem to join a DSL WAN:

    User Name and Password,

VPI and VCI numbers for Verizon,

    Selection PPPoE and PPPoA.

Those old Bellsouth (now ATT) modems were preset at 8, 35 (VPI and VCI) and PPPoE LLC.

Verizon uses 0, 35 (VPI and VCI) and PPPoE LLC.

A Virtual Channel Identifier (VCI) is a unique identifier which indicates a particular virtual circuit on a network.

Virtual Path Identifier (VPI) refers to an 8-bit (user-to-network packets) or 12-bit (network-network packets) field within the header of an Asynchronous Transfer Mode packet.

Think of them as a very simle combination lock to get into a wide area network (WAN). Without these two numbers you cannot access the Verizon network.

If you can log into the modem and change the VPI 8 to a 0, and enter your Verizon UN and PW, you're good to go. If not, return the modem as only those in Florida can use it with Bellsouth (now ATT) DSL service.
