Can my dog die if I feed her cooked kokanee?

I went kokanee fishing yesterday and told my fishing partner I was going to share some of my catch with my dog. He said it could kill her. A vet told me it isn't the salmon (kokanee is a landlocked salmon), but a parasite found in North Pacific salmon that can kill a dog if eaten raw. I have fed my dog small portions of cooked salmon in the past without any problems and believe that cooked kokanee will be safe for her to eat because it comes from a lake and has no chance to be tainted with the North Pacific parasite the vet referenced. Do you know anything specific about this issue?

Update:

I appreciate all of the comments. Moof, I am thankful you took the extra effort to provide me with the links to the exact information I need. My dog daisy will enjoy some kokanee in part because of it.

Your vet seems to be quite knowledgeable about this, so I imagine that your best bet would be to call him or her. Your logic sounds good to me, but it's better to be safe than sorry, right?

From what I can tell, cooked salmon and/or salmon not from the Pacific Northwest are fine..

Or, you could freeze the salmon for two weeks before giving it to your dog, if you'd like to give it to her raw:

So, from the little that I now know, feeding cooked salmon to your dog is absolutely fine (provided you do not let her have a chunk with bones in it).

I just searched "pacific salmon parasite dog" and one of the first sites up was one from Washington State U, headline "salmon poisoning disease" with a description of the whole thing. Summary: your vet is right, cooked fish is fine, the parasite occurs in several species, salmon of course among them, that swim upstream from the ocean to breed, so your kokanee should be fine even if raw. Thanks for asking. I live on the coast and walk my dogs near salmon streams, have heard about this but had forgotten about it. Just read Moof's answer. First link he gives is what I read.

I have heard that it occurs and I believe it has extra to do with puppies that have not skilled consuming them however i believe it is dependent upon if the puppy has come to be use to consuming them and has accustomed themselves to consuming them there much less prone to run the chance as I have grew up with feeding puppies all bones cooked and uncooked ( adding chook bones the one one I take out is the splinter bone within the leg) as all my loved ones ( dad feed them that manner, his dad feed them that manner) have performed it. All my puppies had been excellent and healthful and none of them required any vet care considering the fact that they've had cooked bones. And in away (might fluctuate from ours) puppies do style off prepare dinner bones as good once they burry them within the backyard and than pull them out all rotten, pungent and in part cooked considering the fact that of the warmth within the flooring. And puppies are scavengers and it's believed that that is how puppies in which domesticated they trusted or scraps and rubbish for meals considering the fact that it used to be handy.

The Salmon, itself, if cooked, should be as safe for your dog as it is for you. It's rich fish oils will be good for the dog's skin and coat, too. The only dangerous thing I see is the fish bones. They CAN kill your dog, Give her filleted pieces if you DO feed it to her.

  • Your vet is correct.

If you want to give the dog fish give it pilchards, she will love them.
