newer hard drive into older computer?

I have a newish hard drive from my xp computer that has a fried motherboard. and a really old computer with a fried hard drive can i put the newer hard drive into the older computer? do i need a certian brand or is any one ok?

Update:

the old computer is an 'Aopen' and it has windows millennium edition on it.

    The hard drive may be compatible if it is the right interface. Most newer computers use SATA, older ones use PATA (sometimes known as plain ol ATA)

    Even if the hard drives' are a compatible interface, the operating system installed is certainly not. You'll have to format and reinstall the OS using the appropriate install CDs for that computer.

    Generally, any brand is fine. As long as the older computer has the right type of connections. Newer computers typically use S-ATA type connections, and older ones use IDE. It should be easy to differentiate since IDE cables are much wider than S-ATA. Here's a picture to clarify the difference though.
