A motorway service station with a good reputation?
Somebody told me once that somewhere in the North of England- possibly somewhere near Carlisle- there's a motorway service station which actually has a *good* reputation. Apparently the food is good quality, reasonably priced, and it's renowned for actually being a nice place to stop.
Is this true? If so can anyone telll me which one it is? I might be driving past it next week and wanted to make sure I didn't stop at the wrong one.

Tebay services and country store is a brilliant place to stop It is spotlessly clean, the food in the cafe is delicious and locally produced. There is a lovely pond where children can feed the wild fowl. The deli is fantastic and all local produce, It is an independent business, run by local people.
Well worth a visit

Tebay - had my brekkie there the other day and my hubby uses it at least 4 times a week - food is great and the new shop is lovely to look around - Never had a bad meal there and I don't think it's expensive for the quality of food, much better than some of the pap you get at some service stations - and you pay through the nose for said pap
ETA - found this website will give you all the info

The story about the heart shaped forest is sadly not true -the ledgend is that during WW2 a pilot crashed his plane into the hillside and his parents planted the wood in memory of him - sadly it is a local myth and there is no truth in it - it's just a wood that is grown in a heart shape - Tthe diehard romantic in me really wishes it was true and I pretend it is :0(

It'll be Tebay - that one's always winning surveys, and I see it's the highest rated on that site. Basically it's family run, with a farm shop, and set in a picturesque area with a small pond. However, I'll warn you now that at the wrong time it can get very busy and very dirty, plus it uses 'proper' restaurants rather than fast food which tends to annoy children. It's pretty expensive too - no matter what people try to tell me, when I went they were "offer"ing £10 for a breakfast. No thanks!
Don't get me wrong, it's good, but most of that is because of the location and there are plenty of good services out there: Oxford, Warwick, Hopwood Park, Killington Lake, Annandale Water, Gretna Green, Stafford, Baldock, Cambridge, Winchester and Derby all spring to mind, and are fine if you just want to pop in, snack, walk and pee.

If the Tebay services really are good - and I believe they. then are they are an exception that just goes to show how awful the rest are.
Most motorway services are a disgraceful rip-off, just pull off the motorway into a small local town ...Motorway services are run by big multinationals and pay their staff minimum wages. Think about it - when they pour two coffees, (that's' just a bit of hot water and 2p worth of cheap catering coffee) the services charge you as much as they pay the person who pours it for an hours work. The government should open up service areas to local businesses and lets have some real service - nationwide.

Look out for the 'Heart Shaped Wood' on your righthand side north bound. It was said to have been planted in memory of a young local soldier by his finance
