What's the difference between a Burial entry and a Cemetery entry in FTM 2008?
As I enter information in my FTM 2008 file, I question what is the difference between a BURIAL entry & CEMETERY entry?
I understand the physical difference, but not the logic of having a place & date for both BURIAL & CEMETERY. One would infer the two are the same. I would consider the Burial entry would have a DATE and the Cemetery entry would have a PLACE. The two fields are redundant unless a grave was relocated; yet, this would generate new entries. I would like to know what the accepted protocol is.

I have an older version of FTM, but I have the same two possible entries. I use the BURIAL when I know the date and place of the burial. I use the CEMETERY when I have located the burial place, but haven't found the date of death or burial. For instance, I have one gggrandfather that I know where he was buried, but I don't know when. There is no stone, and the record I found gave no date, so I used the CEMETERY, left the date blank, but made the notation of what cemetery he was buried in, and the lot and plot numbers. I don't know if it is the accepted protocol, but it is how I use the two.

I haven't a clue, because I use Roots Magic, but I know where to go:

It is a board devoted solely to FTM questions. You have to register, but it is free and they don't spam you.
Perhaps you use "Burials" when they were not buried in a regular cemetery -
- at sea,
- somewhere along the Oregon Trail,
- unmarked grave on family farm (Marked with a wooden marker that has since rotted away, more likely),
and Cemetery when they were buried in Rose Garden Memorial park, Springfield . . .
H R Worthington, a terrific guy, has a suggestion over at the FTM forum on how to enter cemeteries;
town, county, state - Cem. name; ie
Modesto, Stanislaus, Calif - Acacia Cem
Modesto, Stanislaus, Calif - Masonic Cem
Modesto, Stanislaus, Calif - Rose Garden Mem Pk
That way, if you look for everyone buried in Modesto, you can run a custom report for all cemetery records containing "Modesto". Handy, if you are going to be in town on business and want to spend an afternoon looking at tombstones.

I use FTM version 16. It has Birth, Death, and Burial. After each of those choices you have a space for Date & Place to fill in.
