Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW), (English: Bavarian Motor Works) is a German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company. Founded in 1916, it is known for its performance and luxury vehicles. It owns and produces the MINI brand, and is the parent company of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. 740i (E65 platform) - denotes a 7 series chassis (BMW largest 4 door platform) 40 is for a 4.0L V-8, and i is for the short wheelbase. If it has a L in the numbers then it is a longer wheelbase version of the 7 series. i.e. 750Li - in this case the 5.0 would be for a 5.0L V-8 twin turbo. The older 750iL's were 5.0L V-12 engines.
Mercedes-Benz is a German manufacturer of automobiles, buses, coaches, and trucks. It is currently a division of the parent company, Daimler AG (formerly DaimlerChrysler AG), after previously being owned by Daimler-Benz. Mercedes-Benz has its origins in Karl Benz's creation of the first gasoline-powered automobile in January 1886, and by Gottlieb Daimler and engineer Wilhelm Maybach's conversion of a carriage by the addition of a petrol engine the same year. Mercedes uses a similar namimg scheme, the 500S (W220 platform) S is Mercedes largest 4 door chassis (not including the Maybach) with a 5.0L V-8 engine. If there is a L somewhere in the numbers it signifies a long wheelbase version of the model. With the newest platform W221, there is no longer an L version. All W221's have the same wheelbase.

The Benz lettering has always been confusing at best
In the 1970's there would be things like the
200 D 280 E 280 S 280 SEL 300 SEL etc
The number stood for the displacement of the engine
280 would be a 2.8 Liter
The D stood for Diesel, the E stood for electronic fuel injection, the S stood for the Big body style L stood for Long
an SE (short big Benz) SEL (long big Benz)
So a 280S would be a big Mercedes (short) with carburetor
a 280 SEL would be a big Mercedes (Long) with fuel injection
There was also a T model, which was Estate (station wagon)
Then in the 90's they tried to simplify it
C class became the smallest car
E Class became the midsize
S Class became the large
ML sport ute
G Big spor ute ect
the number after the letter still denotes the displacement of the engine
S500 (big with 5 liter engine)
Then they had the SL, which was a convertible
Basically - its a confusing mess

The MB cars are categorized by class
A class A is the bottom line is not much more than a soap box (Mercedes style!)
Class B is next upper class
All the way to the highest I have seen here is class S
This is the first letter. It is similar to Toyota Camry, RAV4, Corolla…
As an example a C230K would mean a class C car with 2.3 Liter engine, K for compressor (supercharged)
The 0 is the very basic version
However this is not an absolute!
When there is K in the name it means supercharged, all others are turbocharged.
I don’t know if MB makes aspired engines.
When you see AMG this is the name of the company that made the power train
MB does not make high performance power trains, they are subcontracted.
I don’t know BMY except Bavarian Motor Works.
Hope this properly answers your question
