First, dig 3ft wide by 2 long by 1 deep, YES 1 deep. Then, add water and watch it sink. fill up your rectangle 4 to 5 times. It all depends on the type of soil you have there. Go to sleep (no sex) and when you wake up next day in the morning, get your short handle shovel and you are ready to go. THIS WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.... THE BEST!!!!

I would use a post hole digger they are fast and you can control the depth pretty well, for length all you would have to do is move it to the side in the direction you want to go after you lift it out of the first hole. then just clear out the residual dirt with a shovel. This is how I dug the holes for my pond and 20 x 50 pool since I could not afford to have a back hoe come and do it, the post hole digger made the work a lot easier.

my husband and i just started a garden and landscaping our front yard and we planted rosemary in small walk way in the front. it was a tight space so i used a pick ax, i think its called?, and it worked wonders. after a few swings with that i used a small shovel or my hand to remove the dirt. it made it so easy. if the dirt is hard then soak it with water before using the pick ax.
