Do brand new cars take time before achieving their rated gas mileage?

I have a 2010 Camry SE (V6 275hp), rated for 19/27 MPG. I got 18.6 on my first tank of mixed driving, then 24 on a highway trip (~80mph). The engine has 700 miles on it. Does good gas mileage take time to break in?

The very fact that the piston, piston rings and the cylinder is all brand new is a major reason why it takes time for a good mileage to break in. After your first service when things get all lubed up, you should be seeing a better mileage.

The things you can do for a better car:

Do not avail the free oil change. Wherever you do it, make sure you put in a fully synthetic oil. It is a bit expensive, but considerable benefits can be achieved in the long run.

Do not run your car on air conditioner in very high speeds. Whenever you drive, always increase speeds gradually, that way you have better mileage and less wear and tear.

Never expect to reach the rated MPG on any car.

Those are accomplished by professional drivers who use every trick in the book.

They do not drive like an average driver. They do not sit in traffic hitting traffic lights, "the same light 3 times".

Feel lucky if you get within 1-3 MPG.

Our president reads the posted rating and believes it.

    I have a 2003 car rated 27 MPG highway.

I got that one time using the speed control at 65 MPH on a freeway, at about 3/4 tank consumed.

Normally I get about 24 MPG highway. Even at a higher speed.

shouldnt but you have to understand many times its the driver and place what a company say it should get is they using a good bran dof fuel and most of time test it on a track or machine so how you drive it matters where your driving matter and type of fuel matter youcant say i use high octane all the time since none are the same so its like this say my car gets great mileage with shell high octane but same with mobil regular its up to driver tyo fibnd the right fuel whats recomended it just that doesnt mean you have to use any type its what fuel gets you the best mileage with that you need and how you drive it i get better mileage than my wife does but drive same car

my friend has same car get way less than i do

the other guy gets more than me as car its how one drives and what fuel car might get better but id say check your mileage with another type or brand of fuel since not every car is the same they just look the same and not every driver drives the same

it all depends on how you drive. on the mix you allmost got 19/27 and you were going (80 mph) on highway. slowing down a little will help you achieve your goal. good gas mileage depends on your foot.

that because its new and plus you are braking the car. i already know you were not suppose to go over 50mph till you got to 1000mi. its says it in the book and they should have told you that because you have to brake in the engine. plus you will get better mileage after the first free oil change.

YES they do and will, usually after about 6-8000 miles they loosen up and start running the best! Every thing is new and tight, tight tolerances to make them last.

you are broke in, change your damned oil. 500 and counting.mixed driving aint bad.slow your acceleration speed down and youll get the 24, or buy an old 5.0, they will get 26 hiway

it should improve some with break in , but it is more about how you drive , if you arent super smooth you wont get as good MPG
