Have you tried using a single lens as a telescope ? Obviously not. It doesn't work like that ! But the bigger problem is that, yes, ancient civilisations had some glass available, but the technology was very primitive, and probably not well understood, and not under much control. The first difficulty with making a half-decent telescope (particularly for a demanding application such as astronomy) is to get a good, clear blank of colourless glass, with no irregularities, and no air-bubbles or other inclusions. Secondly, you have to have the technology, the theory, and the experience, to work the glass into a decent lens. But a single lens does not make a telescope. You need an eyepiece. And you need some sort of mounting, ideally adjustable, which allows them to be held in the correct relation to one another. And if you get all that, then there are all sorts of problems, such as chromatic aberration, to be overcome before it is even as good for observing as the naked eye. So it is more than just a matter of having a sort of glass available. Even after fairly decent lenses were reasonably well available in Europe, telescopes and microscopes did not suddenly spring into existence overnight, as it were.

Spoon jar, jar spoon!.....Maybe he needs a bit of a Tommy Cooper lucky charm. Without pulling any strings he could charm a young woman "Just Like That!" ha ha.
