Save the document from hotmail to your computer. Right click on the document and select "Open With". Use Notepad to open the document. Usually in the first few lines, it will tell you what kind of application was used to create the document. Of course, you will see a whole lot of characters not meaning a thing but you will see some whole words, like Adobe or Word, etc. Once you figure out the application, close the document in Notepad and open it in the application that was used to create it. If you are still having problems, then more information will be needed. Hope this helps!

No saving a damaged file will not open it. If you do not have Office installed, you can get Open Office ( http://www.openoffice.org/ ) This is a free set of office tools similar to Microsoft Office but it is free and will most likely open your .Doc or .Docx files.
