Truth be told regarding speed penalties in NASCAR.?

Historically they were used to manufacture wins for media darlings. The good ole days where they claimed to actually timed guys with stop watches! You have no shot at doing that accurately! So with that being said they computerized the system. As a Montoya fan I have to admit I'm beyond upset, but I'm not sure what happened.

Modern Cup cars have to track speed using RPM guage, which again isn't very accurate! I think NASCAR would be better suited to give everyone a chip like in openwheel racing, that allows them to program pit speed. Having a race decided on something that has nothing to do with racing is bad for the sport! Another controversy is not what they needed!

What say you?

Update:

Mr. Miller: I understand wheel spin and fuel milage those are things that are part of racing. I just think something as unimportant as pit speed, when you can't really measure yourself is kind of absurd. Not to mention the history of abuse.

Update 2:

I think a larger issue is the horrible racing! The only difference between this race and last years was less cautions and no exploding tires! The race, like too many Cup races, it has become nearly impossible to pass. I want to see the guys with the fastest cars have a shot at passing. I think NASCAR has some changes in mind for next season but the COT combined with the coil binding setup has ruined on track racing.

Leave it like it is. Humans make mistakes and it means people can win or lose because of them. That's why racing separates the good drivers from the rest of us.

    - Guys miss shifts. Should we make everybody run an automatic?

    - Guys calculate mileage wrong and accidentally run out. Should we have a computer calculate it so they know exactly how far they can go?

    - Guys spin tires on restarts. Should we have traction control?

You start making everything automated and you end up with F1. Lots of high tech stuff and horrible racing because you have a computer making sure you don't make a mistake.

BTW NASCAR allows up to 5 mph over the pit speed limit before you get a penalty. Since you get maybe 2 of those per race it doesn't seem to be a big problem.

Edit: The pits are important. That's why teams try so hard to find good fast pit crews. Drivers can make up or lose a ton of time getting into and out of the pits even without breaking rules. Safety is the reason for pit road speed limits. Nobody wants to see anyone else get hit by a speeding car.

The tach measures engine speed which is why the pace car leads everybody around before the race so they can see what engine speed they should be using on pit road. Its no different than an analog speedometer. x RPM in x gear = x speed. As long as you are in the correct gear the RPM at that speed is always the same since you cant change gear ratios during the race.

well nascar gives teams 5 miles and hour of gray area.. then they say your speeding .. so there is a cushion. teams just push it to the point some over do it from time to time. If they want to make sure not to speed. they could put a low rpm chip in the back up ignition box being they have 2 .switch to it when they pit , then switch back to the race box when back on the track. In case of a race box failure they can pull or change out the chip in the pit ignition box . This is easy as pulling a chip that looks like a flat fuse . But to be honest .. how many people that have got a speeding ticket when running just a few miles and hour over the posted limit. ever truly felt they deserved the ticket? Montoya is no different.. he made a mistake just like when they leave wheel loose .. it happens and never on purpose. just be like jr..and admit it and move on.

I would like espn, tv media, NASCAR .. show the viewers .. where they were speeding . if they can give lap speed on the track ..they should be able to show pit speed . that way people/fans don't feel they were cheated when a team/driver makes a mistake.

    I wanted Juan to win.

The computer said he was too quick through two of the timed segments.

You have to be very careful with the last segment. The timing equipment is in the rear of the car. You cannot accelerate until the rear of the car has passed the last line if you are already using your 5 mph buffer.

I'm not sure Juan was the fastest car, he just happened to be in front all day. When he started 12th he fell to 14th and never passed a car that had not passed him. If he had the fastest car he would have finished 5th at least. The the COT on this track sucks because it is so hard to pass.

I'm sorry for Juan but no one took it from him. He made a rookie mistake by pushing the pit road speed. I'm sure he was excited having lead so many laps.

Pit road is part of racing, including the speed limit. Races are won and lost every week on pit road.

Juan will win the race next time by not making that mistake again.

NASCAR uses every means available to manipulate races, and for many reasons.. That ain't new.. They use every opportunity that comes up, to group the cars together.. They've changed the whole format, to to benefit the driving styles of some drivers.. They can throw a caution to prevent a pass, or wait until a pass is complete for the result they want.. Insisting the fans want a green flag finish, and if something happens, waiting to throw the caution, or doing it right away has robbed several drivers of wins.. The race should end at the finish line.. They can't control who gets there first.. Even if they have have to go back to who was leading the last time bye, it has to be at the finish line.. Anything else wreaks of dishonesty, because it is dishonest..

There is so much pressure on these guys that they all have to push the 5 mph over rule to the limit, but the means of timing, and lack of a perfect means of timing by drivers, would make a couple of thousandths of a second seam unfair.. I can't argue with that.. The drivers should have a way to move into the pits without any mistakes as quickly as possible..

Everyone says horrible racing.. The cars can't pass...

Of course they can't pass.. They are all going the same speed.. Didn't you here what Tony Stewart said, after the race?? If any of you saw the lap times, they were all turning 52.50s, to 53.50s for most of the second half of the race.. The track was slower at the end.. You can't pass anyone if you can't catch them.. Tony even said that the only opportunities to pass were on a restart..

The COT was designed to make the cars even in performance, and it has.. Explain to me how do you race, if everyone is the same??

There have been speeding penalties for many different drivers over the last few seasons. I'd tend to believe that Juan WAS speeding rather than the possibility that NASCAR is picking on him. I think that's "sour grapes", and was glad to see his attitude had changed a bit by the time they interviewed him after the race.

As far as speeding goes...you'd think with the advances we have in this day and age that there would be some way to have an accurate speedometer for even a NASCAR.

The cars...I really dislike the COT! And that's coming from a Jimmie Johnson fan, who probably wouldn't have won 3 in a row without the COT. It's not as exciting or entertaining. Trying to pass stinks and you can't nudge a guy out of the way without totally wrecking him. That's not good for the sport.

I say all drivers have the same chance of speeding or not speeding down pit road. I'm not against Montoya, but every one has to use their RPM gauge, whether or not it's accurate, to monitor pit road speed. Drivers get caught speeding with the current system on a weekly basis, whether or not they think they were speeding. Every driver is subject to the rule, this time it just happened to catch Montoya at a bad time in the race. It's the same for everyone, and everyone gets the same penalty when they're caught.

Trust me, I'd be upset if it was Mark caught speeding, but if they tell you to come in and serve your penalty, whether or not you broke the rule, you serve your penalty. Try to avoid doing it again in the future. That's racing. Take it, move on to next week.

    That's what I say.

ADDED: Good drivers get caught speeding, but great drivers overcome it.

Montoya, like he said, got screwed !

I didn't like that at all, but it was Montoyas fault.

They give them an extra 5 m.p.h. and he should've ran a few hundred r.p.m.s below, what he thought was the maximum. He had enough of a lead. He just got too greedy. It's a tough lesson. His speed was measured electronically and his speed was measured excessive at two points, or two intervals. As far as you other observations, just remember that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway wasn't really designed for NASCAR type racing.

Remember in a nationwide race last month the computer was telling the officials that 12 cars were speeding and they weren't. I wonder how much over he was.

The only thing I have to say is...

What team ended up in victory lane?

What team has won the last 3 championships?

Who can Nascar make more money from?

Hint: the team name starts with H and ends in Motorsports.
