In Windows Vista, it's in
C:\Users\*yourname*\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\7xxxxx7j.default\bookmarkbackups
You will need to go into the Control Panel -> Folder Options go to the View tab, and make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected.
Then go find your bookmarks.
Unfortunately, they're in an odd format with .JSON extension. So I'd copy the bookmark backup files somewhere else, then reinstall Firefox and "Import" the bookmarks. Havn't tried that part yet, but that's where they are.

The bookmarks are stored in your 'profile' folder which will normally be found at c:\Documents and Settings\{Username}\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox where {Username} will be your logon username. The folder you need will be something like ahlqtp13.default and the file bookmarks.html.
Sorry - missed the bit about Vista - the source folder is different - C:\Users\{username}\AppData\ and then as above Mozilla\Firefox
