Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 21, 22 and 23 - the state's annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday.

Today is a holiday for me, well moreso tomorrow. You know. I got sort of screwed this year. See, there is this first time home buyers "credit" that the IRS has, but you had to pay it back. Well, they changed it to an actual credit as of 1/1/09. We closed on 12/14/08, having no idea that this would happen. I think they actually did it after the first of the year and implimented it retroactively. What the hell man. Also, being in CA and having bought a new development home, I believe it was as of the first that we would have qualified for another like 8 grand from the state. I'm super bummed we didn't know about this. Argh. Oh well, I won't look our 0 interest $7,500 in the mouth, but it stings knowing that if we'd only gotten pushed out to the first (or known to push everything out) we would have been that much better off. Either way, it was a good year tax wise. It also provided me with some quality OT. Totally glad it's over. Luckily at our practice, today is more of a formality to make sure that nothing disasterous happens (which *knock on wood* never seems to happen because we're always well prepared for it, especially with the e-filed extensions and what have you). ************* Hi Wire, Did you close after the first of the year? *************** That is very true Beatle. Very, very true. :-) Or, I think it's June 30, 2008, the day before the loan became available at all.

The tax free day is in Texas, not just Houston and this year it will include school supplies.
Supposedly the state is trying to do the same on a certain week during hurricane season so people can buy hurricane ready supplies.

You know, you're far better off going to a ten percent off sale than waiting for the silly no-tax day. Think about it. Sales tax is 8.25% locally (6.25% state, 1% Houston Metro, 1% Houston).
This is a gimmick that gets the rubes into the stores because they think they're "stickin' it to the man!" Whoa, an 8.25% sale
Look for back to school sales in the paper and on-line. Look for coupons. You'll save a lot more. Better yet, you won't fight the crowds of people. Shop when you want.

August 21-23. But William is right. It is silly to wait for 8.25% off, when alot of places are having 10-25% discounts right now. I just went shopping, and alot of stores were having sales. (i.e. Express - buy 1 polo get 1 50% off, Aeropostale - all tops 50% off, Hollister - random sales, Gap- (they are giving out cards for one full price item 40% off), etc...
