How is your faith different from anyone else's?
I constantly read posts from people saying that they *know* something is true because they have *faith* in it. Millions of Christians know that Christianity is true because they have faith in the Bible, while millions of Muslims know that Islam is true because they have faith in the Koran, etc.
Having once been devoutly religious, I know first-hand the comforting feeling that comes with faith, but I fail to see how members of one religion can claim that their faith in their religion is in any way different than someone else's faith in a conflicting belief.
Christians now have faith in a very different God than Christians of several hundred years ago, which is why I haven't been dragged from my home and burned to death for being an outspoken atheist yet. Most Christians today will tell you that this isn't righteous behavior, yet Christians with the same faith would have been perfectly fine with jeering as I burned not too long ago. Most of these people were born in predominately Christian countries to Christian families, so I have to wonder how many of them would be Christians had they been born in Saudi Arabia or Iran.
So my very roundabout question is, why does your faith matter? I'm not even claiming it doesn't, but how do you distinguish your faith in a loving god from a god who wants you blow yourself up or kill unbelievers? Terrorists are mostly very devout and incredibly faithful. So is it really faith that defines your morality and relationship with the divine, or is just good judgment and compassion? Essentially, as a moral atheist, I don't see how faith is the great thing it's made out to be, and I'm wondering if someone can enlighten me on the subject.
And please, I'm not looking to start a flame war, so religious people who want to tell me I'm going to hell or atheists who want to expound on the stupidity of religion need not bother. I'm asking a legitimate question.
@Rage: while I agree with you wholeheartedly about terrorists being brainwashed, I'm still not sure how someone knows the difference. I'm sure that most terrorists are as convinced as some very nice moral religious people that they're NOT brainwashed. I'm sure that my beliefs are the result of a certain amount of brainwashing, too. I don't have an answer and I'm not looking to bash, since all sides fall victim to brainwashing. I just think it's an interesting question.

It's good judgement and compassion. Most non religious people I know do more to help other people than most religious people I know.
My faith is exactly like most atheists I know.
One only needs to look at the demographics of religion to know "faith" is cultural and nothing people inherently believe from with in.

Your question is a little odd. It is as if faith is some object that we can pick up separate from any other object. But faith is just that set of actions that occurs naturally under a belief. It cannot be separated from belief. And belief cannot be separated from the desire to seek and know and experience our Creator.
So when you say "why does yur faith matter", you're really asking why we seek our Creator and that question is not difficult at all.
And your comment about faith defining morality just doesn't make any sense. You won't even find the word "moral" or "morality" in the Bible.
I'm thinking that your view of faith is more like a plan to manipulate God or a plan to use religion to manipulate other people. One of the recurring themes in the Bible concerns people who try to manipulate God to do what they want Him to do. You say you were once devoutly religious. I'm sure many people say that, but it's not Christian. Jesus spoke out and lashed out against the devoutly religious.
As you can see, I'm struggling a little to understand your understanding.

I'm going to be honest, I only skimmed your question, but judging from what I read:
I believe that everyone's faith is different. I'm not just saying the Jewish faith is different from the Christian faith, or, Muslim faith is different then Atheistic faith, I'm saying that one Christian can have different faith then another Christian. One Christian could firmly believe in Heaven, and be against Gays and Lesbians, and another could believe in Heaven, and agree with Gays and Lesbians. . .[[I hope this makes sense]]
My faith matters. It's what keeps me going through the day, what reminds me that my sister is always watching over me and is safe and protected. I guess faith really is good judgement and compassion. You have to have a firm belief that God does exist. I believe that faith does define your morality and relationship with God.

In short and simple; what makes my faith different or more correct than anyone else's is who I believe Y'shua (Jesus) to be, and who I am to Abba (Father God). My faith is not a religion (a bunch of dos and don'ts), but rather a personal relationship with Almighty God as my Father. Just about every religion believes that Y'shua (Jesus) was a good man, good teacher, or even a good prophet, including Muslims. However that's where it stops. Yet Y'shua declared Himself to be God and the ONLY way to heaven. He declared that, "I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life, and no one comes to the Father except thru Me." That's the difference. Most other religions believe there are many roads that lead to Heaven. Other religions believe that their's is the only way to Heaven, and again, accept Y'shua as a great prophet, just not as great as their spiritual leader.
The logical conclusion one must determine, is whether or not Y'shua was a liar. Because either He was telling the truth, or He was telling a lie, that He was God, and that only thru Him can you get into Heaven. The next question would be, if Y'shua was a liar, then why do so many other religions believe and proclaim Him to be a great teacher and prophet. If someone declared themselves to be God, and says there is only one way to Heaven, thru Me, most people would think He is nuts. Again, how can you claim someone that is obviously a liar, or crazy, to be a great prophet and teacher? In fact how can you incorporate a liar and wacko into your religion as a Holy Man?
As before, either Y'shua was a liar; a crazy man, or else He was telling the truth and is God in the flesh. As Y'shua once said, "Except a person be born again they shall not see, nor enter the Kingdom of God." Being born again refers to being spiritually born into the family of God, and therefore my faith is about my relationship with Almighty God as my unconditionally loving Father, and not some tyrant ready to cast down lightning bolts in judgement for every little screw up. That's the difference.
One final note, Christian means Christ-like, which the Catholic Church is not. So don't lable Christians with the Catholic Church that slaughtered hundreds of millions of people, Jews and Muslims alike, and anyone else that would not bow their knee to the Pope. And I actually prefer to be called a follower of Y'shua, or Jesus Disciple. I'm not religious, just faithfully following Y'shua.

I still believe one's personal relationship with God is more important than what religion they may follow. I think in the case you mention in which terrorists are very devout, I'd say they are severely brain washed and act not through a personal relationship with God but rather what has been burned into their brain.

i think of that maximum religions are notably lots a similar... all have god and maximum have good messages and consider out to make human beings good human beings. i'm a Christan and do i think of human beings like the Buddhas isn't in haven reason they at the instant are not Christan? No, because of the fact they nevertheless are nice people who possibly do no longer even know something approximately our faith and our god is possibly relatively a similar god as theirs. they do no longer additionally be able to be Christan because must be like me being a Buddha, aint gonna ensue reason i know no longer something approximately it. comparable suggestions. which would be kinda problematical to carry on with, in case you have questions plz inquire from me.

well I recon when they were burning witches , those christians probably couldn't read........and only did what their preacher said.
I believe and my God, the God of abraham,Isac, jacob, moses and the God and father of our Lord Jesus christ....
When I need help, He helps me...He is always there....I have a problem and it's serious I ask for help and He sends it....help comes in many forms and I always look for it and expect it and it comes...I do not ask if the problem is self made....and only according to His will.
It is not fake, or make believe He is as real as anything....I don't know about other christians....but HE has made Himself available to me many times and so I trust Him completely...He has even sent angels in remote places to help me...they didn't look like any angel in a book or on TV...but they weren't dressed exactly right either..they were as solid as anyone but they spoke differently precisely, and dressed alittle too clean...like mannequins in a department store...weird.
that's what my faiths about.
