How do you do this with a computer?
I have a Dell Dimension L700cx that I was wanting to upgrade the hard drive in. However I have NEVER done this type of work to a computer before.
Do you just unplug the old Hard Drive and remove it, and then add in the new Hard Drive, and plug it in? I understand to install the new Windows XP on it. You have to "format" the disk for it understand it the disk. How do you do that?
If you would please explain in detail how all of this needs to be done. I would greatly appreciate it.

Yes, you just take one hard drive out and put the other one in. When you turn the computer back on, your BIOS screen should appear, because it doesnt have the hard drive to boot off of (theres no operating system installed yet) Most operating systems include disk formatting tools so just use your XP or Vista disk and boot from it. But if it doesn't, download a live disk formatting tool (such as DBAN http://www.dban.org/) Put the disk in and at the BIOS screen choose to boot from the Disk.

Yes, the hard drive "unplugs" and you "plug" in the new one.
Put the XP disk in your optical drive and restart the computer. Follow the prompts on your screen and XP will format the hard drive and install.
Sounds more scary than it really is.

If you want to keep all your programs and music and stuff from your old hard drive you can clone it to the new one with Acronis True Image. You can go to www.Acronis.com and download the free trail. Then just follow these steps.
