forget it. Start charging other people. This will shame your friends into eventually paying.

The cost to them is the least of your problems here! Once you start charging for a service it is classed as a business and there are several rules and regulations that apply. You would need a Health & Safety certificate, liability insurance etc. Also, you need to contact your local council - they aren't always happy about people selling food from a private redidence. You need to amend your home insurance to show that you are working from home and you need to check your mortgage terms and conditions and the small print in your deeds/leasehold - some companies do not allow you to work from home. Then there is the issue of tax and NI. You need to sort all these things out before you decide whether it is financially feasible to start this business. If you don't sort all these things out then you could end up with serious legal problems.
