if you have any cortizone spray put it on the spot..take and put a old teashirt on him to keep him from biting and scratching it..my sister had to do that for her mini dashund when she had her spayed put a toddlers tshirt on her to keep her from getting at her stitches you can put a tail hole in it.. it had snaps that went around the legs..

NEVER USE PEROXIDE ON A HOT SPOT IT JUST IRRITATES IT FURTHER! Daily cleaning of the Hot Spot, even every two hours for the first day or two, will speed up the healing. Also, any topical anti-bacterial ointment will arrest the growth of the bacteria. These skin lesions can take a week to finally dry and look like they are going to heal. Once they are no longer oozing, simply keeping the Hot Spot area clean will be all that's needed. The fur begins to grow back (sometimes a different color!) within two weeks.

Apply hydrocortisone spray to stop the itching. Benadryl tablets can also stop the itch, but it's best to check with your veterinarian first.

Additional home remedies that can be used until you can see your vet:

•tea bag compresses (black or green tea) to help dry the area out. Tea can be used as a wash or as a compress.

•Domeboro's (Burow's) solution (aluminum acetate) - available over-the-counter at pharmacies to help dry the skin out. Can be used as a compress or as a spray.

•Hydrocortisone creams - Some people advocate using a thin film of an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream. I would recommend talking to your vet first -- in general, creams and ointments only serve to "gunk up" the area and prevent proper drying if used incorrectly. Also, if the pet licks it, you want to make sure that it isn't toxic

My mom's dog had Hot Spots to the point of his butt is naked. He's itched all the hair off. We use Sulfadine twice a day and he stops itching. Also, make sure he is flea free or they will swarm it, it seems like they LOVE that stuff.

I dont know about the peroxide or benadryl, I'm just telling you what I know works for us.

    Good Luck!

OH! And to prevent them from coming back, there is a shampoo with Sulfadine in it that will treat the skin before a hot spot occurs. Wash him in it once a week or so and he should be itchy-free!!

Peroxide = Ow and no good. I don't know if benadryl is safe for dogs...

You can put a small amount of Neosporin on the hot spot, though, as long as you make sure he doesn't lick it off.

    Do I Treat Hot Spots?

In most "hot spot" cases, you'll want to treat both the inside and the outside of your dog. Begin by clipping the fur away on and around the wound to expose it to air, and then clean the affected area thoroughly. Have someone help you hold your dog if your dog resists. Remember, this might be a little uncomfortable for him. Using a gentle oatmeal bath will help to soothe the skin in and around the itchy area too, which may help your dog to settle down while you tend to the wound. It is necessary to kill the surface bacteria so using a cotton ball or gently pouring hydrogen peroxide directly on the wound is advisable.

There is a healing oil that can be applied directly to the affected area. It is a combination of Urtica urens, symphytum, calendula, hypericum, and Arnica mixed within a base of extra-virgin olive oil. Then lavender, chamomile, and geranium oils are added to the formula.Benedryl®

Peroxide will make it much worse. Childrens benadryl is just fine tho in the right dosage! I've given my mini doxie bendadryl before when she's had allergic reactions.

I gave my puppy Benadryl when she sat on a red ant hill :)! (she is silly) but I wouldn't recommend giving ANY medicine to your dog with out asking your vet. You never know if it could be allergic or something.

I wouldn't put any medication on it, either. That might hurt it!

I use sulfadine for hot spots. I also use peroxide but I'm not sure it will help.Any idea how this started. Benadyl is safe for dogs but you need to find out the proper dose for the size of your dog

No hydrogen peroxide. If you have some aloe vera lotion or wet tea bags that will help sooth the wound. Please take the dog to the Vet tomorrow.

NO PEROXIDE! that can eat the healthy flesh too.

benadryl might help him if it itches, but it'll make him drowsy too.
