Why is it when watching a US movie or programme,most of the time when someone gives out their telephone number it begins 555.

They use "555" because it's an unassigned prefix. If they used any other number, it might turn out to be someone's real telephone number and subject them to unwanted calls.

Ever heard of a song called 867-5309(Jenny)?? Well, that # is STILL getting calls! They use 555 because it's a FAKE number. Yes, there are people who will call a number they see in a movie or tv show. I reckon the 555 exchange is to prevent them from actually getting a person!

because there is no actual area code 555 this ensures that they wont use a number that could inconvenience real subscribers
