What is the origin of the mullett hair style?

History

A precursor of the mullet, unrelated to the style explosion in the latter part of the 20th century, first appeared in the early part of the 19th. According to the Notes section of the Viking edition of Lydia Davis's translation of Marcel Proust's Swann's Way, "Jean Baptiste Prosper Bressant was a well-known actor who introduced a new hairstyle, which consisted of wearing the hair in a crew cut in front and longer in the back."

Where Did Mullets Come From?

After realizing the abundance of mullets that can found around the world today, it's hard to believe that there was once a time when the long-haired locks of awesomeness weren't around. But, the late 1960s and early 1970s there were no mullets to be found and it took the somewhat strange formation of David Bowie's alter ego and alien Ziggy Stardust to really create the buzz that eventually pushed the mullet into the mainstream. It didn't take other popular celebrities much time to carry on the mullet torch through the 1970s, with such stars such as Florence Henderson, the mother of The Brady Bunch, showing that mullets were more than just a thing for the guys.

The mullet was invented by a 19th century barber named Ezekiel Mullet. A man who had been traveling a long time and who had very long hair came into his shop one day. Mr. Mullet started to give the traveler a crew cut as he had requested, but had a heart attack part way through and died before he could finish the job. The traveler decided he liked the haircut, and kept it that way for the rest of his life. His sons down through the years adopted the same hairstyle. The traveler's name was Jedidiah Ray Cyrus, inventor of the horseless, wheelless carriage that sits up on blocks in the front yard. He is the great, great, great, great grandpappy of Billy Ray Cyrus.
