Burning incense ok in non smoking apartment?
Not moving right now. Read the apartment ads anyway though. Many of the places to rent are non smoking. My question is about being Buddhist and burning several sticks of incense daily. Is this a problem in a non smoking building? Was just wondering what everyone thought about this. Thanks so much.
Great answers everyone. Was wondering if it wouldn't come under the freedom to practice my religion in peace in my home - or apartment as the case may be.

It shouldn't be a problem. People burn candles all the time so incense should not be a problem either. Just be aware that some apartments that have that as part of their terms have a REALLY sensitive smoke alarm that could be set off with even a candle or stove. Also be aware that some apartments lock the alarm so that you are not able to shut it off or disable it at all.

why not phone one of those apartments and ask. I'm thinking they don't want the problem of fires because of climate change and everything is so dry and would easily catch fires. We here in Florida changed over a few years ago from using candles during a blackout or after a tornado or hurricane (not only because of the possibility of gas leakage but because of the fire aspect) to using batteries. Even what looks like candles is lit by a battery. Life is changing, the apartment complexes are getting with the program. Maybe you should save your burning anything for temple services. There is also the problem that if insense is allowed to be burned then your neighbor would want to also smoke their marajuana and that would cause problems. So when they say no to burning they mean everything that's being burned. I was going to say we in the 1950's used to burn incense to clear the fish smell from the kitchen, then started using lemon candles and now have changed from that to things like Glade plug-ins to send fragrance into the room. Btw, I've had Budhist friends in the past and none ever burned incense in their apartment so maybe burning is just a matter of choice. Find an apartment then that allows it.

actually, incense IS a health issue for many people! it causes people with chemical sensitivities much more severe reaction (asthma attacks) than even cigarette smoke. this is do to the combination of chemical perfume in it and the burning/combustion. i have been beside myself and have to move due to the downstairs neighbors incense seeping up into my bedroom through loose baseboards, etc. to the point where it's choking me! so yes, worse than cigarette smoke for some people.

Yes, you can burn incense. Smoking is a health issue - burning incense isn't.

You might have to speak to the superintendents of the buildings to see what their rules are.
