Which Nissan 300zx should I buy?
In terms of the engine/tranny... I know the engine comes n/a, turbo and twin turbo. Of the three which would be more reliable? Are the turbos prone to wearing out prematurely? Do the turbos do anything other than adding more power like somehow reducing wear on the engine? How much labor and cost is it to swap out a turbo? I really don't need a car that is super fast just one that looks cool and is reasonably reliable. I am looking in the early '90s... I've heard the auto tranies were poorly built and I prefer a manual anyway. How reliable is the manual trans? Other wise I would just like your opinion on these cars.
Thanks
After reading a few questions and answers on here I get the idea that a non turbo engine would be a better choice with reliability in mind. Sounds like the higher pressure can cause issues especially for older engines. Would you agree with that?
mythbuster: there is not a single american car made after the '70s that I would be caught dead in. gladly there seems to be some life in ford but until they achieve the reliability and quality that foreign cars do I will still buy foreign. I own a mazda car and suzuki motorcycle and have had multiple toyota trucks. I love rice burners. :)

ive been looking to get a zx myself lately and i too have heard bad things about the auto tranny...
ive been recommended the twin turbo version as although the engine will run with more pressure, it is made to handle it. but it all depends on how the car has been treated during its life. if you opt for the N/A version then its propbably safer as there arent turbos to go wrong. i know of a few people who have had TT versions and theyve run fine.
thing to look out for is turbo smoke and so on. turbos are very pricy when they go wrong, however the turbos shouldnt wear out unless they have been thrashed all their life. some diesel (and petrol) turbo cars can do 250,000+ miles on same turbo.
300zx all have the VG30DE (non-turbo) and VG30DETT (twin turbo) engines, and nissan dett engines are some of the best around (better then any american rubbish!!) and are found in skylines (RB25/26DETT) silvias (SR20DET) which are all very reliable (if unmolestured) . there built to take the power of turbos, high reving etc.
however, if your not that worried about speed then theres really no reason to get the twin turbo version, the cars both look the same on the outside, and yes your right, even though they are reliable as i have said, over a period of 15+years the engine can weaken due to the turbos. the petrol consumption is much higher on twin turbo also.
there great cars and very reasonable for the money they go for! try and find one with 80,000 miles or less and you shouldnt have a problem!

Who said the trans were poorly built? I love the Nissan Z cars since the first i could remember when i was a kid: the 300ZX. Maybe perhaps they need a new clutch pack every now and then because of a sloppy foot.
In the turbo systems, the turbine is designed not to wear over time. Some turbines are engine-oil based lubrication or they have a consealed gear oil system of their own.
The VG engine from the 300ZX has a sufficient amount of power and torque and the TT models had made it even more of a blast to drive.
the #1 reason why turbo systems wear and break down is because of either someone not getting an oil change on time or the gear oil wasn't changed in an extensive amount of time.
I personally enjoy the 370Z and the Datsun 240Z because they share similar styling cues.

but the turbo model is badass.
with the rear spoiler it is a much better looking car. And it drives a lot better.
