I would like to know how to change my messenger settings. does being on a mac make a difference? seems I never had this problem on pc

Since nobody else has answered your question, I will do what I can. I do not own a Mac but I do have the links to the Yahoo Messenger for the Mac help pages and maybe you can find the answer there.
This Instant Messaging help page has on it about how to ignore somebody, archiving, choosing fonts and colors, etc:

From what I have read it looks like Preferences are still even in the Mac version located in the Messenger menu though I think for a Mac it is called Yahoo! Messenger menu.
