Multiple cell phone questions/ SIMS card?

What exactly is a SIMS card? Is it just a memory card? If so, what does it hold? Does it hold all your contacts, images, and songs? What does it do? The reason I'm asking is because my phone is broke but I want to keep all my contacts and pictures and songs and stuff but did I have to get a SIMS card in order to do that? Please help. Thank you.

Update:

My plan is US cellular, so how do I save all my contacts and pics??

I'm guessing that you have a CDMA network (Verizon)

In this case, you cannot use a SIM card.

If your phone supports it, go get an SD card and save all of your stuff onto it.

If you have AT&T, T-Mobile, etc than you already have a SIM card.

only at&t and t-mobile use sim cards, sim cards allow you to use the service and store some contacts and messages, no it does not store pictures or messages,

think of it like a key i tlets you access the wireless company
