Why do Republicans like to stretch the truth?

I keep reading "cash for clunkers "canceled by President Obama declared as another failure. Republicans get real. We all know that the program has been such a big success. So many people purchasing new cars and getting rid of gas guzzlers that the President just put a hold on the program. He wants to make sure that people who have already purchased cars gets credit before funds are gone.I am glad that I do not let Rush do my thinking for me. ha, ha.

I'm not a Republican and I think the program is a failure. How many of those dealers have been able to make good on the vouchers? We all know that the program has been a big success -- speak for yourself. Here's how successful it has been: My neighbor, true liberal to the max, drives a SUV. He bought a car off Craig's list for $500 and traded that one for a new car. Yep, the ol' gas guzzler is still on the road. Now if he did that how many others have done it?

You may not let Rush do your thinking for you, but perhaps you should.

Let's think about this for a second:

If the program was a success, wouldn't the logical response be, "This cash for clunkers program is a big success. Let's appropriate more money for this."? That way, the program could continue to bring benefits in an uninterrupted manner.

Why don't liberals actually learn about the program

Originally sponsored by a Democrat and Republican senators who had included funding for the program, which was submitted for part of the stimulus package.

Not included in stimulus package but added to Iraq/Afghan spending as pork without the original funding part of the bill

That was Pelosi and Obama screwing up a great idea

Even the authors of the original bill voted against it because the funding part of the bill was removed

Liberals should go get the facts before posting nonsense and claiming GOP stretching the truth

Taking money from taxpayers and giving it out with such programs in return for political power is prohibited by the 10th Amendment.

Not that the Constitution matters much anymore...

The constraints in "cash for clunkers" weed out most people.

Your car had to be in running condition AND registered this past year. The combined highway/city mileage had to be less than 19mpg. It couldn't be older than 25 years (1984). And it has to be in running condition.

Not exactly a "clunker" by any standard.

A waste of money -- they could've purchased the cars at cost, given them away to those in need and walked away for a fraction of the cost. They would have also ensured GM/Chrysler would have a solid Demand for a while as well.

It wasn't cancelled, it was suspended because the amount of money allocated was being burned up more quickly than they thought. You can't gauge that kind of program. You just put it out there and see how the public responds. Obviously it was a good idea (Republicans called it stupid) and it's gone very well.

What did you Republicans want, a blank check and no budget for the program?

    Dems win again.

  • 1 decade ago

Wrong. The miles-per-gallon they were allowing was as low as 22 mpg. Kind of kills the intent of the program. And the people who were using the program were not exactly hurting economically. So us taxpayers are subsidizing people with money who just wanted a new car.
