my kitty tested positive for feline leukemia...?

I finally found out after a month of an endless ear infection why it wouldnt clear up. After having been on fluids all day after becoming dehydrated on an antibiodics, my kitty was looking way better. I was so happy and felt a wave of uplift... then the vet called and told me that she tested positive. She said it is carried in three ways but isn't sure how severe it is until she tests the bone marrow.

I am an absolute mess. This cat has been my companion for 11 years... when I was single she moved around with me. I am now married, across country with my 3 year old... through it all. I am scared, I feel super lost and sad and I can't stop crying thinking about her spending her first night away from home in a cage with an IV. I HOPE TO GOD that it is the form that acts as a "carrier" or that she can fight it off ... I just don't know.

Has anyone ever ever ever been thorugh this? What was the prognosis?

If it was terrible... don't answer. Or at least don't be so graphic. I am just so freaking sad. :*( what's messed up is I don't even know it's severity yet. I just cant imagine...

I had a cat named Snowball, she died, she died!

Mom said she was sleeping-she lied, she lied!

Why oh why is my cat dead?

Couldn't that Chrysler hit me instead?

We had 6 kitties infected with feline leukemia. The grandmother cat was immune and gave it to all her kittens. Most of her kittens died 6 months and under. The fact that this kitten lived to a year gives you good hope that she will continue to do so for some time. All of the kitties lived to about 6 years old and were put down when they developed serious problems. One lived to 13 years old and actually died of a completely unrelated problem. What typically happened is that the kitties would develop different kinds of cancers. Diagnostics is what is really expensive and since a cure isn't possible, you'll know the time has come. So, yes, I would take it if your children aren't really young. You'll know when problems develop that treatment isn't going to help, so costwise, it's no more than any other kitty.

It is so heart breaking to lose a pet. I know how sad you are feeling because my LoverBoy died from feline leukemia on this past Valentine's Day! He was not quite 9 years old, the perfect picture of a big, huggable white cat, when we started noticing that his pink ears, the pads of his feet, and his pink nose was becoming pale. Since it was during the winter, and one of the coldest winters we have had so far, we just thought that maybe the cold was getting to him, since he loved to hang around outside. Then he started to sleep more and more. We thought that it was because he was starting to get "old." The only troublesome thing he ever had was this sore on the base of his head that wasn't healing. That prompted a visit to the vet where he was diagnosed with FLv. From the time he was actually diagnosed to the time his spirit left his little body, was about a week. He more or less just went to sleep in the comfort of his familiar surroundings at home and didn't wake up. He really didn't seem to have suffered much, but every situation is different, like with humans. Nobody is going to go through something the same way.

It was devastating for us. We felt like a family member had passed, so I am all too familiar with that shock and that agonizing sorrow and I do sympathize with you on that.

All I can say at this point is please don't worry about something that you don't know might happen or could happen, but hasn't happened and may not happen. Many cats with the feline leukemia virus live long lives. Find out what the vet has to say and go with that.

Take care of yourself and kitty, and I am hoping for you to hear the best news you can possibly hear in this situation.

Dear wendy, i'm so sorry to hear about your little kitty; 11 years is a long time, you must love your cat very much.

i didn't know cats could get leukemia too, but i'm sure your vet will be able to reccomend some sort of treatment for your cat, or maybe you could try taking kitty to see an animal hospital where to get a second opinion?

    *hugs and love*

My cat of 13 years named Max had leukemia. The vet said that there wasn't much they could do, so instead of letting him suffer I laid him away.

I know it's hard to think about, but if the leukemia is severe in your cat, think of what's best for him and not what you want. Don't make him suffer.

I'm sorry. I send you my affection.

Give your "3 year old" a great big hug and thank God this happened to your cat. I'm here looking for answers about a spot on my sons lung that might be cancer and I'm thinking to myself (after reading your question) what I wouldn't give for this spot to be on my cats lung.

Sorry to sound so cold. But a child is so much more precious than a cat. I mean just look at some of the posts here suggesting you "put your cat to sleep". Would anyone suggest the same thing for a child? I think not. I understand you love your cat, but you have something so much more precious.

Try to stay upbeat and don't panic. Your vet will help you through this.

I took in an 11-year-old cat who tested positive for feline leukemia and she lived another 7 very happy years. We kept her away from other cats, kept up with checkups, and gave her lots of love and attention. Cats will take their cues from you. If they sense that you are on their side, caring for them and keeping up with all their familiar rituals, they will fight to get well. Don't lose heart, and keep telling your kittycat that you are doing everything you can for her. I'm convinced they take that in and that it helps.

My cat died from this. :(. They will get to the point where they cant walk or go to the bathroom or eat and that is when u want to put them down. Dont let her suffer. Poor kitty. It really stinks. But i think there is something that makes them live with it to where she can leave. I am sorry and good luck.

my second cat had feline leukemia, and it really does suck :(

eventually he got so sick he couldn't walk or get up to go to the bathroom. we felt so bad for him and we didnt want him to suffer anymore, so we put him down...it was really sad, but he's not in pain anymore :)

my third cat who was also around at this time, had feline leukemia too, but he died before it made him sick (died from another reason entirely)
