Which is the best dog food that is common?

my yorkie puppy is 6 months, almost, and he's been eating Eukanuba suggested by vet and i heard ENOUGH from people that it's a terrible food, so is pedigree and proplan which i use to feed my other dog, Jack russell.

I am running out on Eukanuba now so i was planning to buy a different pet food this time and also to a higher quality one. I've found out Innova, Canidae, Wellness ,etc. are really healthy for dogs and was planning to get one of those but i could never find them in ANY pet stores or any places where they sell pet supplies and products.

The thing that gets in the way is that i live in CHINA and it doesn't seem like they ever import those food and only sell those comercial foods. I've seen so far Royal Canine, Proplan, Eukanuba, Pedigree, Science Diet and whichever brand that was noted UNhealthy (although some websites i found stated they were one of the best dog foods).

Are there any of the healthy foods that could be found anywhere (Beijing) or could you give another (healthy) dog food suggestion that could be easily found in basically anywhere??

Thank you !

I'm so pleased to hear that you've heeded some wisdom. The foods you've heard are terrible ARE terrible and will kill your dog MUCH earlier than you'll EVER be ready for it!! Because of your location it could be challenging to find the higher quality brands. CHINA is, after all, responsible for the LARGEST pet food recall in 2007, in the history of the US. For that reason, I would suggest feeding raw food to your dog. Understand that raw meat and bones are natural for dogs and cats to eat. With a Yorkie, you can give slices of raw chicken leg or breast, fish filets, red meat of any kind, organ meats are excellent, an egg 3 times a week with some shredded cheese or cottage cheese whisked in.

Just think in terms if you were a vegetarian and how you would need a variety of vegetables to meet your nutritional requirements. The exact same is true for dogs and cats in terms of meats and bones. Variety is the key and you buy your pup the same quality of meat that you would like to eat yourself. The difference is, don't cook it for your dog. It's a stupid HUMAN idea that we've outsmarted Mother Nature. You may have already seen mega signs that it can't be done!! If you've ever been camping or hiking, how many wolves, coyotes or foxes have you ever come across having a campfire to cook up the catch of the day? Have you ever seen any of those critters chasing a corn muffin across the prarie? EXACTLY!!

Dogs in the wild predominately eat RAW MEAT!! Will they eat blueberries if they can? My pup loves them, don't know if your's will. I like Oysters on the 1/2 shell, do you? All critters will have different tastes IF they have a choice.

It's SO easy to feed raw, especially for a Yorkie. The meats that are on sale are the ones you buy and then cut them into bite sized pieces using all the same cleanliness practices we use for ourselves. Separate into "meal sized" portions. Freeze them in ziploc baggies and label them with ingredients and dates. Start with individual meats so you can find the ones that your Yorkie loves most and the ones he refuses to touch. Make sure to slip in some liver or heart because organ meats are so rich in nutrients. DO NOT cook the meat because you destroy VITAL nutrients.

I personally use a food processor to puree chicken parts, red meat (beef, veal, pork, etc.) boneless fish (go easy on the tilapia or catfish), eggs, cottage cheese and some shredded cheese, one clove of garlic, green tea leaves, probiotics, fish oil, any and all organs I can get, extra virgin Olive Oil, powdered milk for some extra calcium, and a few other things for good measure. Once I get that all mixed up, sort of like mixing a meat loaf, I make individual meal sized patties, wrap them in wax paper or whatever and freeze them. For my pup, it's a 16 day supply. For your Yorkie, it's a couple months worth. Before you go to bed at night, take a pattie from the freezer and place it in the refrigerator so it's thawed by morning. Just place it in your dogs bowl and it will gobble it's breakfast. No mambie-pambie stuff here. Dogs DO learn how to handle raw food, as it is their nature.

After my pup devours his RAW breakfast patty, he get's a RAW meaty bone that he has to 'work' at to chew up. It might even take him a couple days but his teeth gleam like pearls. Chicken wings and small fish bones are the only bones that I've stayed away from because my pup is a bigger boy and doesn't always chew like he should. He's a Texas Blue Lacy which almost looks like a Weimeraner and he shines like a new Silver Dollar. I've had him since he was 7 wks. old and he is SUPER healthy and svelt!!

I buy his dry dog food, "Earthborn Holistic Primitive Natural" and "Taste of the Wild' High Prairie" from our local livestock feed store. Grocery stores and WalMart don't carry these premium brands. Petco/Petsmart carry very few. Livestock Feed Stores are the best places to find the high quality pet foods at a much greater savings too, along with many other "natural treats". All of this may seem expensive at first, but when you realize that our dogs don't need to eat NEARLY as much of the premium foods as the food is MUCH more nutrient dense. They don't poop as much, you don't have NEAR the vet bills as you avoid food allergies from cheap fillers, etc. Take it slow and you can master this and your dog will LOVE you SO MUCH for your effort. It's SO worth it. Good luck and Best Wishes.

I don't blame her for not eating Iams- I'm sure it doesn't taste any better than the ingredients look. :-) She'll thank you for finding her a better food. Well here's my list, best to worst: Innova Evo- 15 out of 10. Best food on the market, IMHO. Orijens- 9.5 Artemis- 9 Wellness- 9 Merrick- 8 Canidae- 8 Timberwolf Organics- 8 Professional- 8 Fromm- 8 Chicken Soup- 8 Solid Gold- 8 California Natural- 7 Health Extension- 7 Avoderm- 7 Blue Buffalo- 6 Foods I do not suggest, rated for comparison only: Iams- 1.5 Eukanuba- 2 Purina- 1 Pedigree- 1 Science Diet- 1 EDIT: Royal Canin- 1 Any good food will extend your dog's life and reduce shedding and odors- it's just part of being a healthier dog. On the other hand, a Pom is double coated and will always shed to some extent.

Have you given any though to making your own dog food? I am in the United States and I buy a good store brand from Costco that is Chicken, Rice and Vegetables but I also make them some home made food. If you do a web search on dog food recipes, you will find many out there. My dogs like it when I make up a recipe and freeze individual portions for them. I use different meats like turkey, chicken, beef or fish mixed with different grains and different blended vegetables. I have had veterinarians say that we should stick to professional dog foods but they also sell dog food. And it has not been that long ago before we had a lot of dogs and cats dying and the stuff that was killing them was in the expensive as well as the cheap stuff.

the problem is that the same branded foods are different in different countries, in the US Eukanuba is not thought of as a good products, in the UK it has different ingredients......so it is difficult to say.

Fish for Dogs, James Wellbeloved, Burns are all resonable products in the UK.

You need to do some research into ingredients suitable and usable nutrienally wise for your dog and then see what is availabe to match your criteria in China.

Build your dogs immune system, then look at feeding BARF or a cooked version, this is available everywhere, just takes some research to find out what to give and you can make it up in batches and freeze it, so it is not too time consuming.

Garlic is a good immune system builder, and brewers yeast tablets are good ( daily together these are great worm, flea and tick preventors) garlic can be poisonous for dogs if given in quantity but you would only be giving a tiny amount either a few drops of garlic oil or a quarter - half of fresh baked tiny garlic clove.

Taraxacum officinalis (Dandelion) is a rich source of vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin A, D, C, various B Vitamins, iron, lecithin, silicon, potassium, magnesium, zinc and manganese.

Echinacea purpurea is well known for its excellent benefits for immune functioning and for its antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) and Silybum marianum (Milk Thistle) are also beneficial, with Milk Thistle regarded as one of the most important herbal liver tonics and restoratives with the medical use of Milk Thistle traced back more than 2000 years! Scientific analysis of Milk Thistle shows that it contains a flavonoid complex called silymarin, which is a powerful anti-oxidant which is largely responsible for the medical benefits of this herb.

These herbs work as a tonic for the immune system and are often recommended to prevent and assist recovery from illness or infection.

Neem oil for dogs can help with fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites and mange mites. It promotes a strong immune system, healthy skin, a shiny, problem free coat, strong healthy teeth.

OK, you can feed your dog raw.

    Prey Model is VERY simple.

Lots of raw meaty bones (chicken necks, wings and thighs for a dog your size, probably one every morning) and then a little diced chicken and diced chicken liver in the afternoon.

Google raw Prey Model and raw BARF for more information.

ADD: Science Diet is just good advertising; it's a worse quality food then Pedigree even.

Those commercial foods suck. Read the ingredients, they're filler. EVO, Innova, Wellness, country natural are very good foods.

I actually heard that was pretty good food. I heard Science Diet and Iams are good. More than caring about brand, you need to pick up a bag and read the ingredients. If yoi don't know Chinese ask someone to translate the ingredients in a Chinese brand. You want whole food ingredients. Godd luck! If it takes a while cook for him until you find someone. Lean (chicken) meat and vegetables is good for him. It gets really expensive though.

Just try to find something with no corn and you'll be good. Thats why canidae and wellness are better.

Royal canin by far the best.... picky pup loves it. As well as some canned food that is by a chef someone, its 79 cents on sale at pet-co right now.

the royal canin is expensive, but does wonders for their bodies, hair is softer and shinier, and its small enough that they don't struggle.

    Yorkie 28.....or mini....

oh, and they have a store locator on their website, royalcanin.com i think. Good luck!!
