I'm losing weight during pregnancy... am I eating enough?
I am 20 weeks pregnant and I have lost 8lbs since I discovered I was pregnant.
I have started eating very healthily and of course am cutting out booze - all my friends are worrying me about my weight loss, but I feel that I am eating sensibly and healthily and that the weight loss is simply due to better choices and no alchohol - rather than limited calories.
A typical day:
Breakfast - one slice wholemeal toast, one table spoon baked beans, one rasher bacon, cup of tea with milk, orange juice, shapers yoghurt.
Snack - apple and diet coke.
Lunch, half honeydew melon, half tub cottage cheese, two ryvita, cup of tea, yoghurt.
Snack, small piece of homemade cake, tea, ryvita with cottage cheese
Supper, homemade meatballs with tomato sauce, small jacket potato.Diet coke.
Does anyone know if this is enough? I don't feel hungry, I eat when I need to and I'm looking and feeling better than I have in years.... bump is growing huge and lots of kicking - surely this is just a sensible diet and not a problem? What do you think?
Sorry - yes, should have mentioned I was a little overweight to begin with - 5ft 8inches and was 12 and a half stone - now 11st 11lb.
Doctor or midwife not bothered to see me since 8 weeks, hence asking question!
Did have booking in and then dating scan at 12 weeks, but did not see midwife, only Radiologist. Anamoly scan booked for Wednesday. It's my second, so they don't seem particularly bothered about seeing me. (UK).
Thanks for all the advice x

Were you overweight to begin with?
I'm about a week behind you, and I've lost a few pounds myself, which my doctor isn't concerned with as I'm overweight. It sounds like you are eating quite healthily, which is very good! You are supposed to eat a couple hundred extra calories while pregnant, maybe add some more fruits and vegetables to your diet, like a nice tossed salad with dinner, or some extra fruit at snacktime.
If your doctor isn't concerned about your weight so far, I wouldn't worry. There's still plenty of time for gaining! Good luck, and congrats!

I lost over a stone in the first 2 trimesters. Now, at 36 weeks still weight the same as I did before I was pregnant.
I was really sick though, so if you haven't been sick then maybe you need to eat a little more, or check with your GP that you don't have an over-active thyroid which pregnancy can sometimes trigger.
The baby though will take all he/she needs and you will get what's left. I wouldn't worry too much.
EDIT: I would check with your GP as you should have had your 16wk bloods taken at an antenatal appointment with your midwife and also should have had at least your 12 week scan and be scheduled in for your 20 week scan also. (Assuming you are in the UK!)

I had this with my last pregnancy and currently with this one.
When you are overweight to start with you don't tend to gain as much weight. With my last pregnancy by the time i went into labour i had gained 6lbs in total as i lost nearly a stone in the first 12 weeks due to sickness.
This pregnancy i have lost 5 lbs and im 20 weeks.
I was told that the baby is fine so there is nothing to worry about, the baby is just using up some of my reserves as well causing the weight loss.

I was told by my physician that losing weight during pregnancy is possible if your normal diet had not consisted of all the healthy foods you must consume while pregnant. Now you can't go on a low carb diet and excercise 3 hours a day, but if you maintain healthy nutrition and lose weight it's fine. With all the vomiting though you may need to look out for dehydration... you body will begine to try and suck out nutrients and other elements it needs from the baby!! Please, even if you are consistantly nauseated try to drink lots of fluits, and watery fruits such as grapes, watermelon, yogurts etc!! Good luck!!

I think if you are not eating because you feel sick that's ok but for diet's sake it's not too good. It has often been said that a pregnant woman should eat for two people, but this is not true.
What is true is that during pregnancy a woman has to provide good nutrition for two individuals. The growing baby gets all its nourishment from its mother through the umbilical cord, so diet is very important. If the mother is lacking in any vitamins and nutrients her baby might lack them too.
A pregnant woman needs approximately 2500 calories per day.

Weight loss aside which could just be down to a healthy diet and no alcohol. I'm more worried that you haven't seen your dr/midwife! Are you in the UK? If so there are strict guidelines on when you are supposed to have antenatal visits, these are:
1. Booking in appointment at 6-8 weeks
2. antenatal screening/dating scan at 11-14 weeks
3. Antenatal check up at 16 weeks
4. Abnormality scan at 18-21 weeks
5. First time mum extra visit - Antenatal check up at 24 weeks
6. Antenatal check up & routine bloods at 28 weeks
7. First time mum extra visit - Antenatal check up at 31-32 weeks
8. Antenatal check up at 34-36 weeks
9. Antenatal check up at 38 weeks
10. First time mum extra visit - Antenatal check up at 40 weeks
11. Antenatal Check up at 41 weeks (if still pregnant)
Have you had a dating scan? I really would contact your dr's office or midwife, with the exception of the scan dates I have had to arrange all my appointments they don't just book you in automatically!

Are you exercising? If you are, maybe that explains it. It also sounds like you are eating pretty healthy and one thing that may explain the weight loss is you are eating small meals in-between regular meals (which are also small) -a plan that has been shown to help people lose weight; eating 5-6 small meals a day which boosts metabolism, increasing fat-burning.

Put a two litre water bottle and also a glass on your desk every morning. Get through it simply by lunch, and do the same from the afternoon. You’ll exercise better and also recover faster if you’re hydrated. I drink some water when someone asks me a stupid question or sends a stupid email... find something that works for you!

Acquire smaller plates. Little crockery means portion control is quite a bit easier – those diminutive amounts suddenly look huge and you’ll be happier to use less.

Go bland. Plain, straightforward, unseasoned food such as barbequed chicken, plain rice and a naked baked potato are nutritious your palette will tire of these people quickly, unlike salty moreish processed food, which keeps you snacking and piling about the pounds.
