Does anyone know this recipe?

My mother used to make a cucumber salad where she would lay down a layer of cucumber, cover it with salt, put another layer of cucumber, more salt and continue this until the bowl was full. After letting it sit she would drain the liquid off.

Does anyone know how long I need to let them sit? Should I be putting a dressing on them? Rinsing them? And finally, can I add onion before salting to this salad?

Thanks.

Update:

Sorry, I was unclear: the liquid is what comes off from the cucumbers after sitting in salt for a while.

Adding onion before shouldn't hurt, if anything the onion flavor would be drawn out as it sits. I've never made this recipe but I have made similar ones and usually you leave things like that for 20-30 minutes so the salt can have time to release the liquid. It shouldn't take any more than an hour for sure, but I would say a good 20 mins ought to do it

If my guess is correct the liquid might be white vinegar. The old german farm ladies around where I lived as a child made this a lot. (like lazy lady pickles?) I made some just last week, because I'm trying to diet. They are tastee although I left mine in overnight and I think they got a little too bitter, so maybe for four or five hours? Good luck.

    lol

I don't think is matters how long you let it sit, just as long as you put it in the fridge. I eat cucumbers with just salt and I love them!
