My 1998 Toyota 4Runner (5 spd 4 wd) chugs and lugs when initally accelerating and then smooths out. What caus?

es this? Any ideas? I want my poor car to make it to 200k and beyond. :(

Ok. It just started recently and scared the crap out of me. I will head to the dealership...

    Put an OBD II code checker on it and it'll tell you what its problems are. This engine has a timing chain instead of the rubber belt, but 200,000 miles may take its toll on the chain. Don't think you can just drive this car without ever tuning it up.
