Help with troublesome laptop...?

ok, I have standard virus protection, but once a month my laptop freaks and thinks it has a virus or two, so it quarantines them and supposedly gets rid of them. Now my computer has been giving me trouble all day (being slow, not loading websites n such). I tried rebooting it and now it won't even load the start menu, toolbar, or any of the shortcuts!! I have never heard of this happening before and I need help. How can I fix this!!

Update:

thank you for your answer colanth, but I can't do anything on my computer at all. It is doing something called a data execution prevention...

It could be a virus. (An anti-virus program will only find the viruses in its database. If a new one comes out, you're in danger until they update the database. Viruses don't have tags that say "I'm a virus".) If you can boot into safe mode, update the anti-virus program (if it doesn't update every day, download and use the free version of Avira) and run a full scan. (It may take hours, so start it and leave the computer alone until it finishes.)
