Long hair CAN cause roots to be flat because of all the weight pulling it down. But having said that even short hairstyles/layers can be flat at the roots.
Here's some things you can do:
- Use a volumising shampoo/conditioner, like Matrix Amplify, Bedhead Superstar, BigSexyHair.
Here you can choose to just air dry your hair, the shampoo will give SOME lift but results won't be dramatic. If not,
- Apply volumising mousse to the roots of your hair (good one is Tresemme Thermal Creations volumising mousse), massage it in well. Other products you can substitute here are Bedhead Cocky, BigSexyHair Blowdry Volumising Gel, Bedhead Superstar.
- Blowdry your hair in layers, focusing on the roots. Blowdry using a barrel brush underneath or do it upside down. Let it cool upside down before you flip your hair back!
- Apply a light spray at your roots, like Tigi Catwalk's Root Boost. Or a light volumising hairspray.

If your hair is really, really long then the weight is going to pull your roots down slightly but it shouldn't make your hair totally flat. Bedhead volumising products are really good, I use them near enough every day and couldn't live without them! A volumising shampoo, and the Bedhead volumising blow-dry lotion is really good. As for the way you dry your hair, it helps to get a really big blow-drying brush (the big rounded ones with funny bristles) and when you're drying it use a medium heat with a hairdryer attachment and dry the hair upwards against the brush. It's quite difficult to explain how to do it but it's basically like how hairdressers blowdry your hair in a salon. Once your hair is dry to add some extra volume if you ruffle your fingers through the air, perhaps with a volumising wax, then it will lift the air away from the roots slightly more and the wax will keep it in place for the day.

You can use BigSexyHair products they work AMAZING for volumizing, and flip your head upside down and blowdry it that way. Also, use a large round brush at the top of your hair to hold your hair while you blowdry. Good hairspray is key (like I said BigSexyHair is great), as well as maybe a volumizing shampoo and conditioner and possibly even a root lifting gel while still wet before your blowdry. Good luck, hon!!

Thermal Creations Volumizing Mousse is my answer.
No flaws in this product whatsoever!! It is perfect!! This mousse is not too thick and sticky like most I have seen on the market. The application is extremely easy and really fun to put on lol. It gives you plenty and I mean PLENTY of va-va-volume. The mousse, after blowdrying, creates sort of an invisible lifting barrier

well, get a volumizing shampoo&conditioner.
Then blow dry your hair upside down (works wonders).
If you shower before bed at night, pull your hair into a pony on the top of your head.
Tease it when your finished with your look.

1. get layers
2. use BEDHEAD voluming shampoo+products
3. when blow drying it, do it up almost underneath.
4. backcomb it at the roots (underneath to hide knots)
5. use a gel or pastey type thing, 'redken' or v05 is really good.
this video might help :) ..

blow dry your hair upside down, tease/backcomb a little.
brush some of your bangs back and blend in with your hair, get more layers.
volumizing shampoos and conditioners wouldn't hurt [:

You should get layers and try teasing it at the top.
